Apple: the same jerk-off who, one week ago, was oozing doom and gloom all over the pages of the NY Times about how the U.S. was heading for disaster in Baghdad. Even in the face of clear victory, Apple's pen cannot help but ooze pessimism. It ain't easy eating crow, is it R.W.?

A High Point in 2 Decades of U.S. MightI always considered the height to be right after the Gulf War, when the Marines were sent to India on a humanitarian mission (flooding, I think?) and the people were running up to them and were looking at them awestruck. I couldn't believe they were doing that. This may be as high as that though.
(It certainly didn't happen under Clinton.)

Even the headline is twisted - "U.S. power hits high point" as if a low point is on the way. This is such crass emotional manipulation, it tries to make the reader expect a downturn. It's only a downturn for the Left, and the low point is still below them!

"American intervention has not been automatic; Washington did nothing much to halt the slaughter in Rwanda and Burundi, for example. It has often been late, as in trying to stay out of Bosnia until 1995. It has occasionally come to grief, as in Somalia in 1993. More often, though, it has succeeded, as in Grenada (1983), Panama (1989) and Kuwait (1991)."
I love slow balls.
Let's see:
Iran, Somalia, Ruwanda/Burundi, and Bosnia. (Demonrat presidents)
Grenada, Panama, Kuwait, and now Iraq (Republican presidents)
Do I detect a pattern here? You bet! You can't trust demonrats with national security.

Very thinly veiled wishful thinking! Get over it, Apple! You're a loser.

Exactly! I thought the same thing. A little convenient that Apple leaves out this obvious fact. You can't win a war unless you play to win, and the Democraps don't play to win, they play to cover their ass.

Fixed:
American intervention has not been automatic; WashingtonClinton did nothing much to halt the slaughter in Rwanda and Burundi, for example. It has often been late, as in trying to stay out of Bosnia until 1995 (Clinton again). It has occasionally come to grief, as in Somalia in 1993(Another Clinton debacle). More often, though, it has succeeded, as in Grenada (1983)(Reagan), Panama (1989)(Bush I) and Kuwait (1991)(Bush I again).
I'll also add Afghanistan (Bush II) and Iraq (Bush II again).

1 small poing Johnny missed was: the cases where America allowed slaughter (Africa) or was ineffictive happened under Clinton ( a democrat) watch, where America acted decivisly and achived success the Presidents were, Bush the elder, Bush Jr and Reagan. Funny such a 'brilliant' Pulitizer (Putzy) winning writer would miss something so simple.....

But projecting strength is not the same as making friends or enhancing national security. The standing of the United States has perhaps never been lower among Islamic nations and nations with restive Islamic minorities than it is today. Hey, Appleseed, would you, as an individual, make friends with a person or group of persons who continually berate you, lie about you, refuse to act honestly and truthfully, and who always take the opposite side in any discussion? How about a person or group who overtly or covertly supports with money or advice others who want to harm you? The answer is obvious so why would you suggest that we as a county should do it?
(BTW, our national security is NOT enhanced when we appease these folks)

And also a good reason to keeps tabs on these folks. I find that the NYT tends to spawn the talking points the libs start to dish out not long after it appears in print. If you can spot the twisted thinking of NY Times journalists, then you're all the more prepared for what is to come from the mouths of morons like Dasch-hole and Kerry. So predictable.

On the other hand, a hardening of Islamic and Arab resentment into hatred could foster rather than retard terrorism. They can hate us all they want, but without a state sponsor, there will be very little terrorism in the United States. They may blow up a few Starbucks and McDonalds in Amman and Tel Aviv, but they won't be taking down any more American buildings.

Pssst...RW, to clarify some of ther points you raised in your piece:
Grenada (1983) Reagan (R) -- Result = SUCCESS
Panama (1989) Reagan (R) -- Result = SUCCESS
Kuwait (1991) Bush (R) -- Result = SUCCESS
Somalia(1993) Clinton (D) -- Result = FAILURE
Rwanda (1994) Clinton (D) -- Result = FAILURE
Bosnia (1995) Clinton (D) -- Result = FAILURE
Burundi (1996-8) Clinton (D) -- Result = FAILURE
Just trying to be helpful.

[President Bashar al-Assad of Syria said last week, "We will not wait to be the next coalition target."]
Well Bashar? We await your spring offensive. Bring it on. In a few days, you will be (posthumously) renamed Bashar al-BASHED.
[Many Americans drew a parallel to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of communist states.]
Yes, and correctly so. This is because WE (conservatives) understand human nature, and the innate longing to be free, a concept that is simply not grasped by the left, who are so full of their self-righteous belief that only they know best how everyone should live. A pox on their houses. Feh!

[Somehow through the distribution of aid, through a hundred wise decisions and a thousand generous gestures the United States must change minds in the months ahead.]
Again, the typically flawed liberal proscription. The action that will have cemented in their minds the goodness of our intent has already been demsonstrated. We have helped them to become free people.

Apple is projecting his own views/attitudes onto the Iraqis and other Arabs. Like American academia he is the prisoner of the Vietnam experience. No southern white American could be persuaded as he is that military defeat does not radically change the thinking of the defeated.
