A series is a group in sequence, one after another.
Serious means important.
Hugh smokes a pipe and stands around practicing suave.
Huge is very large.

You have only scanned the tip of the iceberg here. You are probably aware of the following, also:
there -- their
your -- you're
its -- it's
The above combinations are used interchangably as though they are equivalent. And one other comes to mind, the use of the word "unique" as though there are degrees of "unique-ness".
Ain't public school grand?
