When you see
The statue go "ker-flop",
All join in
And dance aroun' on top,
And when the verse am through,
We'll sing until we drop,
THERE'LL BE A HOT TIME
IN THE OLD TOWN, TONIGHT!

AMEN! and AMEN!

PREACH IT, BROTHER! Hallelujah!

Here's your Maine SH schedule, by the way:

Maine

Belfast: Second Monday each month - 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. - First Congregational Church, Fellowship Hall. Info: Bobbie Goodell (207) 342-2324; rgoodell@acadia.net.

Damariscotta: Fourth Sunday - 1:00-4:00 p.m.- Great Salt Bay Elementary School, business rte. 1. Info: Edith Berger (207) 832-6561 or berger@gwi.net.

Sullivan: Second and fourth Tuesdays - High School - Info: Tina McGowan (207) 422-3167, tinanjay@acadia.net

New England was the fountain of Sacred Harp, through the Singing School tradition. The SH is definitely Southern in flavor, but you would not find it too foreign. The Western Wind vocal ensemble, which I believe is out of Massachusetts, has recorded several albums of SH music. They sound a little too polished for me, though, I like the more authentic sound of the Word of Mouth Chorus.

Re. "Lorena"; All 6 verses?

One of my favorites, too; it's on my CD "Home From the Hill" with guitar accompaniment.

Now this is going to offend even some fellow FReepers, but hey; I didn't write it! It's from another time, another issue, another war.
But I think that with some updating, editing, and term substitution like "Iraqi" for "Darky" and "Saddamnite" or some such for "Rebel", it might fit the occasion well enough.

MIDI files for most of these are available, by the way, at:

BABYLON IS FALLEN
(Henry Clay Work)

Don't you see the black clouds
Risin' ober yonder
Where de Massa's old plantation am?
Neber you be frightened
Dem is only darkies
Come to jine and fight for Uncle Sam.

cho: Look out dar, now
We's a-gwine to shoot!
Look out dar, don't you understand?
(Oh, don't you know dat)
Babylon is fallen,
Babylon is fallen
And we's a-gwine to occupy de land.

Don't you see the lightnin'
Flashin' in the canebrake
Like as if we's gwine to hab a storm?
No! You is mistaken
'Tis de darkies' bay'nets
An' de buttons on dar uniform.

Way up in de cornfield
Where you hear de tunder
Dat is our ole forty-pounder gun;
When de shells are missin'
Den we load wid pumpkins
All de same to make de cowards run.

Massa was de Kernel
In de Rebel army,
Eber sence he went an' run away;
But his lubly darkies
Dey has been a-watchin'
An' dey take him pris'ner tudder day.

We will be the Massa
He will be de servant
Try him how he like it for a spell;
So we crack de Butt'nuts
So we take de Kernel
So de cannon carry back de shell.

Note: a follow-up of Kingdom Coming. RG

(I seem to recall one version with the chorus "Whack Fal-de-Rah! Babylon is Fallen"... we'll check some of the archives for it.)

I've been watching this thing from the moment the tanks rolled into Paradise Square. I had to check
out Free Republic after the statue came down and read all the comments. Having done all that I think
the World Wide Wrestling Federation should get a hold of that "Bluto" guy and hire him
IMMEDIATELY. This guy was all over the place smashing up and burning Saddam stuff. Call him
Bagdad Bluto " the hammer of Iraq!" . I normally don't care about wrestling but I'd pay to see this guy
in the ring!

Very nice. I could even be cattle-prodded into saying "Sweeeet".

It is a great day for freedom lovers around the world and in particuliar for the newly freed Iraqis.

The left wing elitists and their mirror cousins elitists on the far right are having an absolute miserable day. May the rest of their miserable lives be misery after misery.

Re "Lorena"; If u PM me a mailing addy I may have to send you one of my CD's. And no, I didn't record all 6!
American attention spans don't seem to be what they were back in 1857 these days.

Can you sing Andre Crouch's "Kathleen Mavourneen"?
Takes a little range, don't it?
How about "Somebody's Darlin' "? One of my period favorites. That one can give you the collywobbles all these years later.
I would love to do a duet of that one with a female alto or soprano, and do some of the tight harmony so many of these old songs were written to be sung to.

Bangor is about 5 hours North of here, Damiscotta only around 3. I don't know where the other place is but it ain't round hereabouts!

OH PLEASE:

Some FReeper out there HAS TO HAVE:

* Digital Camera
* Pair of rubber flip-flop sandals (preferably pink)
* large poster or statue of Sen. Daschle...

You know where I'm going with this, don't you...?

"Lower our TAXES!!!" (Waving flipflop overhead); Whakkettey-whackety-whack!

"Educational VOUCHERS for our Children!!!" (ditto); Whacketty-flappetty-spat!

"Protect our UNBORN!!!" Splabbetty-blibbitty-POW!!!

...OK, FReepers, you're on your own from there. But I WANT to see those PICTURES (if not a video clip!)!

Conservative JIHAD time, Amigos!

Now grab those props and wear out them flipflops! {8^{D~
