Oh, and just to add quite quickly, I speak of the 'general public' in terms of not just those living in city and urban areas, or even suburban areas, but instead across the country; I speak of those middle-of-the-road types who hold themselves and others around them to high morals and values. These are the type of people who mostly see these type of activities as 'wrong', while the majority of the public, or so it seems, that lives in very populated areas and often has 'the word or say' in things and stereotypes of the American public, are more liberal, and, therefore, think less of items and activities as such.

Dear Diogenesis,

I have an E-mail list. It is not very large, but it does include on occasion the Boston Globe.

I was recently invited to engage them in a war of images concerning this War in Iraq. You posts here have been of immense value to me.

The Boston Globe is disgusting in their coverage of the War and their portrayal of our heros and champions in the Armed Forces.

Certainly, apologists shall appear to engage in a defense of these vile so-called journalists. IMHO the practices of the Boston Globe are indefensible. They suck huge, and the backlash is coming for them.

Prudence, and a wish not to be banned from FR keeps me from spelling it out exactly as I would like.

Hey, Boston Globe, how do you like me now?

FOX news reported that troops were given strict orders not to take any souvenirs, the one exception being pictures of Saddam. The files were rightfully seached and any interesting information confiscated.

I understand your concerns. FYI, there have been LOTS of photos on the wire of guys smoking, so apparently there's no steps being taken to restrict their use of tobacco. I used the one photo, although it wasn't our troops, and I'm not an anti-smoking zealot but I do have a bit of unease about it as well ... the thing is, though, these guys are under pressure that we back here at our computer screens who've never experienced anything like it can only dream about. My feeling is that if it takes a little nicotine to get them through, then let 'em have the nicotine. Maybe patches would be more P.C. (insert laugh track!).

I had a teacher in high school who was an infantryman during World War II ... great guy, just a peach of a man. Anyway, he said he smoked during the war simply because it helped to (a.) relieve the boredom of waiting around in foxholes for the fighting to start (as he did during WWII, I don't think we've dug any in Iraq, we've been too busy moving) and (b.) relieve the pressure caused when the fighting started.

That could very well be the case. However, the AP story ... a sidebar to the main story, in newspaper terms ... that went with this picture did specifically say the soldiers took souvenirs. When I get to work, I'll try to post the exact paragraph in question.

If they did, they did, I'm not going to fuss at them for disobeying that order because it's human nature to take keepsakes. I'm sure this has been a memorable experience for them and they want souvenirs. I'd wager the same order was probably given in World War II and probably was disobeyed as well, as with the guy I mentioned who had the dagger from the German soldier. If the libs want to make a big deal out of it, if that's the best they can do, my answer to them is "Get a life."

Despite your firm defenses for Clinton and the Boston Globe
you have not substantively defended the Boston Globe's inaccuracy on this matter,
or the Boston Globe's systematic and general attack on US troops and our President,
or the Boston Globe's repeat fondness for plagiarists (rather than Americans).

Have a good day.

You're entitled to your .02, but do we help our cause by looking just as foolish in one way as the opposition does in another?

And as far as Clinton, please show me one word, one syllable, vowel or consonant, where I've defended that jackass in this thread? If you cite one, you're being as inaccurate in your characterization of me as you claim the Boston Globe is being in this situation.

As a resident of the Boston area I am familiar with the publishing practices of the Boston Globe. Their incredible bias is difficult to swallow for some of us.

The Globe has gone out of its way to put a negative slant toward our Military at every opportunity. Take a good look at the headlines and images during the last three weeks. I have them all.

I ordinarily would not contribute my money to their enterprise. Fortunately for the Globe, there is a certain person who might want to see some of their coverage of recent events when he returns home.

The Boston Globe is indeed guilty of many things in their slanted presentation of news. They have sucked up to that ahole former president for many years and they continue to do so. It is difficult for me to separate this issue concerning our military from the equally despicable reporting practices that they have indulged in ever since Slick came upon the scene.

The day of reckoning for the Globe is coming. They are smug and arrogant. I find them quite often to be terribly offensive in virtually every way that a newspaper possibly could be.

Well, Fox News said this morning that some of the soldiers had taken some souveniers, but for the most part, they were small things, like a picture of Saddam or a tea set. I think soldiers in every war have taken souveniers, so this is nothing new. What's the hubbub about? (And as to going through the files, of course they would. They would not be doing their duty if they did not do so.

So if our guys did help themselves to some of Saddam's toys ... again, so what? Big fat hairy deal! It's no insult to our guys.

You draw an absolutely correct conclusion from an incorrectly framed situation.

In none of the wars I can recall there was ever as heated a discussion of the motives and, specifically, whether the military force came to liberate or to loot. When Jenghiz Khan came, there was no controversy becasue he said he came to loot. When we came to Germany, we said we came to liberate, and there was no controversy because no one accuse us of lyinh and pursuiong the contrary.

In sharp contrast, today, we --- our president, administration, and people in the streets --- keep reiterating that we are there NOT to concur. In response, we hear, from San FRanscisco to Paris, "Stop war for oil!" The Arabs go much further and impute to us all sorts of far-reaching conspiracis that would make Jenghiz Khan blush.

When any hint of looting appears in the newspaper it is explosive. When a newspaper places is on the front page, it is playing to that sentiment.

In sum: (i) a journalist ought not ignore the existing sentiment (imputation to us of evil motives) even if he himself does not share it, and (ii) being principled youself and not sharing the above-mentioned sentiment, you misread Boston Globe's deed: theirs was a deliberate play to the sentiment (we are out there to plunder oil, etc.) shared by the "progressive world."

He had a cigarette?!!! GOOD GOD!

And in Iraq too. where does he think he is? In a free country? Just let him try that here in New York. He'll get fined. Enough fines pile up, and he'll go to jail. That'll learn him.
