Take to the streets on V-Day

With Saddam's death not yet confirmed (as this column goes to print), where is Meinhardt Raabe when we need him? Mr. Raabe played the part of the Munchkin coroner in the Wizard of Oz, who, after observing the Wicked Witch of the East under Dorothy's house, famously sang: "As coroner, I must aver, I thoroughly examined her, And she's not only merely dead, she's really most sincerely dead." We need a statement like that for Saddam. But if, as was reported Monday night, Saddam et fils were vaporized into dust, I suppose we may never be able to prove them dead at all.

I don't think we're going to declare victory. We may, a number of months or years from now, declare an end to hostilities. I doubt we'll do that very soon, because we can anticipate that the terrorists will try to attack us there and give us the pretext to continue a military garrison of the country, useful for our upcoming operations against Syria and possibly Iran.

I don't expect to see ticker-tape parades here at home. We'll honor our soldiers but will avoid crowing about it. If we have any big victory parades, they'll probably be held in Baghdad and Basra and will be organized by the Iraqis. But those will be liberation parades, not victory parades. A big difference psychologically for the Arab street and for the Iraqis themselves and far more fitting with our longterm policy of undermining the authoritarian Arab regimes. And our soldiers might enjoy Iraqi parades as much or more than parades at home. When they get home, they'll want to see their families and relax more than attend parades, I think.

I absolutely agree with Tony here. We must have a victory celebration at some time in this. If it is not declared by our President &/or Congress, it must be declared by the people. FreeRepublic must initiate and take that stand and organize it, if nobody else steps up to the plate, and we WILL.
