Steely Dan Confirms First Tour In Three Years

Steely Dan has unveiled details for its first tour since the summer of 2000, kicking off July 23 in Costa Mesa, Calif., and wrapping Aug. 31 in Syracuse, N.Y. The veteran jazz/rock outfit will be touring in support of its upcoming Reprise album, "Everything Must Go," which has been bumped to June 10 from its original May 6 release date. As the band explained in its online newsletter, "the reason, we understand, has to do with something called 'a schedule' for some entity called 'the record company.'"

"Everything Must Go" finds group leaders Donald Fagen and Walter Becker backed by drummer Keith Carlock, keyboardists Ted Baker and Bill Charlap, and guitarists Jon Herrington and Hugh McCracken. Beyond his usual bass and guitar duties, Becker takes the mic on one as-yet-unnamed tune, marking his first lead vocal in Steely Dan's history.

The album is the follow-up to 2000's "Two Against Nature," which was the group's first album since 1980's "Gaucho" and went on to win the Grammy for album of the year.

Here are Steely Dan's tour dates:

I can't think of John Sebastian with the theme from "Welcome back, Kotter" playing in my head.

That is not a good thing.

Let me try that again:

John Sebastian (sound) is incredibly underrated

I can't think of John Sebastian without the theme from "Welcome back, Kotter" playing in my head.

That is not a good thing.

For what it's worth, Brian May did bomb calculations for EMI in his pre-Queen days. He was ABD in Astrophysics and has published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. A few of the rock-n-rollers actually have something upstairs...

These two are not at all the same. One guy ( Baxter) knows what he is talking about and has experience in his feild.. the other ( Bono) is a raging lefty who, has some great tunes to his name, however sees the world through foggy glasses. Bono doesn't understand much at all about world affairs that hasn't been skewed by victim mentality.

They both may make music.. but one of them makes sense and the other gets the lefties to croon. Big difference.

I have no doubt that they're politically nowhere near me, but if I limited myself to conservative rock, I'd have a skinny musical library, indeed.

Yeah, Bruce Willis' "Return of Bruno" and a bunch of Ted Nugent. Good luck with that.

I have over 1400 CDs, and I just assume everyone of them features liberals, with very few exceptions.

But I don't care about Steely Dan's politics anymore than I care about George Bush's ability to play the guitar.

BTW, Steely Dan put together one of the best box sets in the industry. It was just every song they ever released (to that point), crammed onto four CDs. No crappy "alternate takes" and other assorted filler. Just all their songs.

It's a great set, though it makes me feel like an old fogie when I listen to it.

really? I guess you don't dig brilliant, inovative chord progressions, great musicianship, and unbelievably tasty Becker rifs. Steely Dan is F%$#ing unbelievable.

I was a music major in college and played professionally for many years. I've been writing music for thirty years and I can't carry Donald Fagan's jockstrap as a songwriter. He is an absolute musical genius.

Truly sorry you don't like their music.

I didn't know that about May, but Queen really rocked. That man could play.

It was just every song they ever released (to that point)

Sadly, it did not include "Dallas" and "Sail The Waterway" from (A.K.A. Plus Four) ABC Records ABE 12003 1978

I do see that. I just find that songs like "reeling in the years" are really, really annoying.

You're right, I should have said every song on their major albums. It's still a great set.

Oh no, the synthetic neither-rock-nor-jazz is back! Who needs those overworked arrangements? Certainly not this cat - the Cramps are still going strong, the Pretty Things have reformed to pretty close to the original squad, and Hank III, Tony Joe White and the Blind Boys of Alabama are kicking a$$! These two clowns, long known for their infantile marxism ought to join the oldies circuit with the other big stars of the 70s Bobby Rydell, Freddy Boom Boom Cannon and Connie Francis!

(Justa opinionated opinion, thess all!)

If you like Hank III, you'll love The Gourds. Have you checked them out?

I'm going to see Junior Brown in a dumpy little bar tomorrow night. Junior's got licks that nobody, absolutely nobody else can duplicate.
