In Baghdad, A Top Video Rental Is Gibson's 'The Patriot'

People in Baghdad have been spending their evenings watching Hollywood action movies as their city is being pounded by American bombs and artillery, according to an article appearing in Rupert Murdoch's Australian newspapers.

News Limited papers reported today (Tuesday) that a favorite is the Mel Gibson movie The Patriot, in which Gibson plays a revolutionary war figure who reluctantly takes up arms against the British.

One video dealer remarked, "During an evening of air strikes, provided there's electricity, customers want to wind down and be taken in by a story in which the good triumph over the evil, like us against the Americans."

Great flick. Not real accurate though. I wonder what the 'Iraqi' copy leaves out? One can only imagine...

And you see no difference between this engagement and the massacre portrayed in The Patriot?

Of course I do. I understand that The Patriot is a "fictional" movie. Do you? I was responding to the previous poster's contention that there was no event even remotely similar to that portrayed in the movie. Clearly the British DID IN FACT BURN CHURCHES. I don't know if there were anyone inside. Do you? Clearly Gibson attempt to portray that scene or composites of several church burnings into one scene.

Bagdhad Bob sounds more credible than you.

Don't read much eh? Please feel free to correct my source. or STFU. A$$holes like you who attack the poster rather than the sources make FR a real joy.

It is a patriotic movie. Got a problem with that?

It is a movie, not a historical textbook.

A great group of FReepers went to West L.A. to see this when it was first released. Some appropriate comments were made during the movie. Before it started, we mocked the L.A. TIMES ad when it came on the screen.

Uh, the Arabs don't even compare to the early Americans who fought to liberate us against the Brits-not even close.
