In Baghdad, A Top Video Rental Is Gibson's 'The Patriot'
People in Baghdad have been spending their evenings watching Hollywood action movies as their city is being pounded by American bombs and artillery, according to an article appearing in Rupert Murdoch's Australian newspapers.
News Limited papers reported today (Tuesday) that a favorite is the Mel Gibson movie The Patriot, in which Gibson plays a revolutionary war figure who reluctantly takes up arms against the British.
One video dealer remarked, "During an evening of air strikes, provided there's electricity, customers want to wind down and be taken in by a story in which the good triumph over the evil, like us against the Americans."

It will probably be a complete mess, some will devote their lives to trying to destabilize the situation, some will support change but then whine like babies expecting reconstruction to instantly make them live like kings, etc., etc.
The best we can hope for is eliminating the Saddam regime, taking away the WMD, documenting for the world what France and Russia's "anti-War" stance was all about, and setting an example for those in the region that would mess with the US.
Ultimately responsibility for Iraq is with the Iraqi people.

What do you expect when the USA's chief export is Hollywood trash?
When these wackos on the Left coast ask "why do Muslims hate us" you tell them it's because of their behavior and the trash that they make. Most of them fail to see the irony though.

I agree, NBC's AFL coverage is by no means comparable to the glory that was the XFL.

The DVD version with surround sound is one of the top 5 in a rating of it's sound effects.

I didn't care for it much, either. Some parts of it I really liked, but that villain was way overdone and a lot of it seemed intentionally overblown. For such an interesting main character I thought they could have done a better job with him.

Iraq has proud history and heroes and mythology like all cultures need. They are just really far in the past. We should be helping them rediscover them.

It wasn't Brave Heart (how many films are) and could have been much better, but I wouldn't go as far as saying it "sucked".

The church scene was very inaccurate from a historical standpoint. That having been said, the evil figure in the movie was loosely based on the exploits of the English dragoon officer Banastre Tarleton whose exploits in the Carolina's and Virginia late in the War earned him a reputation for frequent use of excessive force and sometimes outright brutality toward soldiers and civilians.
He is widely recognized to be the most hated British officer of the American Revolution.

Maybe we should have issued tomahawks to all the troops. They're handy if you know how to use one.

Make it a Blockbuster night tonight!

The church scene was contrived, I agree. Atrocities against civilians with revolutionary leanings were usually left to the indians.
That notwithstanding I have no doubt that the movie's depiction of Gibson's British antagonist was pretty close to the real thing. See http://www.nps.gov/cowp/tarleton.htm

It's true that Tarleton was hated. I thought the movie went a little too far in demonizng him.
