Local rallies planned to support troops

By Patrick Golden Friday, April 4, 2003

WALTHAM - A pair of locally organized rallies aimed at generating support for troops participating in the war against Iraq are planned for next week.

On Monday, a rally sponsored by the city and the Waltham Elks Lodge will take place at City Hall. On Saturday, April 12, a "rally to support our military" is planned for the Lexington Green.

The city's rally is scheduled to run from 6 to 7 p.m. and will feature local veterans groups as well as a singalong of patriotic songs featuring the American Legion Band and remarks from Mayor David Gately.

"We've got a pretty good lineup, I think," said Walter Hoyt, director of veterans services and master of ceremonies of the event.

As of last night, he was awaiting word on whether bagpipers from Boston Police and Fire departments would participate.

Hoyt said the idea for the rally came from Alexis Shaw, a member of of the Waltham Elks Lodge.

"She made a suggestion to me that sounded awfully good," Hoyt said.

He said the event will be a good opportunity for residents to express their appreciation for the troops.

"I saw that some rallies were taking place around the country, and I thought it would be a good idea for Waltham," said Shaw.

She said the Elks strive to promote patriotism. Expected to attend is Joseph Silvia, the special deputy grand exalted ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the national Elks organization.

"We encourage all residents to come out to the rally and show support for the troops," Shaw said.

The April 12 event at Lexington Green will take place from 11 to noon. Taylor Street resident Sally Collura is organizing the event

Rally in Lexington MA...I never thought I'd see it. This is hallowed ground, where the Revolution was fought. But Lexington is home to many leftist academics from Harvard, Tufts, MIT. One of the most liberal areas in the US. Time to restore this towns proud heritage and show our support for the US
