How lovely to have two 'kinda neighbors' from North Carolina and Florida appearing here, one right after the other!
Guenevere, our hostess, dansangel, lived in Sebastian before work took Dan and her to the Atlanta area.
Said there are four stop lights - none, of course, when I moved to that area in November of 1943!
C'Mom - no word from ofMagog's family about his health problems.
He lost his dear Mags December 23, 2002, and scattered her ashes at sea, per her wishes - then asked to not be hailed here for a time, tending to his own health concerns.
Our prayers go forth for him.
Guenevere - I'm sure you are 'At the Ready' to help count chads whenever required..:))
Thank heaven we do not have U-NO-WHO for a Commander-in-Chief....would be in heap big trouble were that so - - -

I know what you mean. I'm not putting a lot of stock in the stories about 'we got Saddam' either. I seem to recall the ObL slimeball squirming around and we're still not certain if he's dead dustballs in Tora Bora or in Pakistan doin' his Fred Flinstone imitation.

Hi, Pippin, and thank you for the sketch on Jane Pierce.
Truth is, there were so many children lost at early ages, as were women during or following childbirth; or both through illnesses and injuries before the 20th Century.
Each loss was devastating, and we are blessed to have the medical advantages we do.

My favorite first ladies are, from the 19th centuray, Dolley Madison:
From the 20th, a tossup between Edith Roosevelt and Barbara Bush:
FRom the 18th centuary, both Abigail Adams and Martha Washington:
I don't need to tell you the one from the 21st centuary!

Thanks, Daisy! I'm sorry I've been so busy -- I've got major deadlines that should be met today. I'll be back in the swing of things tomorrow. I still haven't read all of yesterday's thread, but I will!

Thank you Billie! :) Wow, two years. That means it was two years ago that the Chinese released that air crew they held hostage.

Hi, LadyX!
That is so true about the infant/child mortality in the 18th and 19th centuries, I was reading up a lot on our earlier presidents and first ladies from that era, and the number of widowed presidents like Thomas Jefferson, wife died in childbirth and Martin Van Buren whose wife died young as well. Then ther was poor old Andrew Jackson whose wife, Rachel died three months brfore he was inaugerated.
Theodore Roosevelt's first wife died in childbirth on the same day as his mother.
And the childred who died so young
Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln had four sons but Robert was the only one to reach adulthood.

Well, Dolley Pip, You've chosen as your favorites some of everybody's favorites I do believe!
Still, I am so glad I didn't live in the 18th or 19th Century. How would we get along without (in no particular order) a microwave, computer, TV, telephone, modern medicine, mascara, curling iron, jeans!
