INS rumor sends some Evansville workers running
March 29, 2003 EVANSVILLE (AP) -- A rumor that immigration officials were afoot caused about three dozen AmeriQual Group LLC's workers to flee its plant, briefly slowing production of prepackaged meals for the military. Between 30 and 40 temporary workers left the plant on U.S. 41 Wednesday after rumors spread that federal immigration officials were in the building. Randy Stuckmeyer, president and CEO of AmeriQual, said two Hispanic men suspected of being illegal aliens produced fake identification to AmeriQual human resources staff Wednesday. "We called the sheriff's department and once that got out, (in the plant) people were gone," Stuckmeyer said. The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Department said no one was arrested relating to the incident. Stuckmeyer said AmeriQual also contacted federal officials about the two Hispanic men. He said the loss in employees had a minor effect on the plant's work making Meals Ready To Eat, or MREs, for the military. The plant returned to normal operations on Thursday. Because of the war on terrorism and war with Iraq, AmeriQual's production has quadrupled in recent months. Stuckmeyer said AmeriQual, with about 1,300 employees, has hired more temporary workers to meet demand.
A: People came to the mfr of MREs and presented fake IDs? and
B: That so many apparently undocumented workers are handling the food that our military are eating?
Newsflash: unless you've been growing and picking your own, they're handling your food too...
