I'm frankly quite surprised at your parsing of words. "Fought?" He spied. It's against the law for an American citizen to steal classified information and SELL IT.

He fought Saddam when the US was being stupid about it. There IS a problem with the "My country right or wrong" motto when taken beyond the point of morality. That problem is in fact and law, recognized. A Soldier must not obey and illegal order, and may well be held to account for blind obedience to such an order.

Pollard spyed. Morally, what he did is now proven right. He spyed to prevent a murderer, Saddam, from murdering. Was there a clear bright line of morality at the time? No. Some of our leaders thought is wise statecraft to support mudrderers and murderous regimes as long as they serve some "real-politik" interest of statecraft. Well , that's bunk. Always has been bunk. Morality is morality, and murderers are murderers.

Pollard's moral vision -- his compass -- was NOT as impaired as that of some of our leaders at the time. The fruit of such "real-politik" was brought home to all of us clearly on 9/11. The delusional age of "real-politik" that puts "shrewd" statecraft ahead of basic morality is over.
