BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Shells hit a palace of President Saddam Hussein as the sound of fighting intensified in central Baghdad on Monday after the U.S. military said that tanks had entered the city.
Reuters witness Samia Nakhoul, at a hotel in the center of the city, said black smoke billowed from near a presidential compound after defenders apparently lit a trench full of oil as a smokescreen.

It was the first time that an oil trench, previously used around the outskirts, had been lit by the palace during the 19-day-old war.

"The fighting is getting more and more intense, with the sound of fighting from all directions. There's artillery fire, rocket launchers, heavy machinegun fire," Nakhoul said.
