U.S. military says did not attack Russian convoy

AS SAYLIYAH CAMP, Qatar, April 6 (Reuters) - The U.S. military said on Sunday initial findings indicated U.S.-led forces were not responsible for an attack on a Russian diplomatic convoy in Iraq in which several people were wounded.

It said in a statement from U.S. war headquarters in Qatar that the convoy was hit in Iraqi-held territory and no U.S. or British forces had been operating there at the time.

"Initial field reports reveal that no coalition forces were operating in the area of the incident," U.S. Central Command said in a statement.

"Based on the reported location, the incident is believed to have taken place in territory controlled by the Iraqi regime. The inquiry into this incident continues and more details will be made available as soon as possible."

"If United States Marines or the U.S. Army had attacked, these people would be one thing..

Dead.."

Exactly my reaction. We had a sad friendly fire incident and killed 18 peshmerga Kurds in the north. If we had attacked that convoy, their guys would be dead.

This convoy was hit by Iraqis, not coalition.

Lots of 'tells' to show that ... "hand weapons"? a 4x4? Marks of Iraqi irregulars.

Welcom RusIvan to the board (04-03-2003). Are you a Russian national or an emigre, and are you now in Russia or the West?

Was it not a similar operation that got Bin Laden out of our hands in Afghanistan? Only the flew out.

The German dpa is now reporting a Russian journalist, who was an eyewitness, is saying the convoy got in between the fronts just as the US started firing at Iraqi posions. The journalist, Alexander Minakov, says he is absloutely sure of this. There were several injuries.

For what it's worth.
