Republican gubernatorial candidate Ernie Fletcher is expected to name U.S. Attorney Steve Pence of Louisville as his new pick for lieutenant governor, Fletcher supporters said yesterday.

''I strongly believe Steve Pence will be Dr. Fletcher's choice when he announces his running mate on Monday,'' said Dave Disponett, a leading Fletcher supporter who is active in the campaign of the Lexington congressman and physician.

This headline could have been subtitled: GOP Infighting Continues in Kentucky." Again, it's a recipe for disaster, as Ben Chandler coasts to a controversial-free Democrat nomination. There is no runoff primary in KY; so the GOP (and Democrat as well) plurality candidate becomes the nominee.

As usual the choice is not even someone who it is rumored to be. Such is politics.

I was really hoping the choice was going to be Brian Crall, even though I'm planning on voting for Rebecca in the primary.

I'll have to disagree with you on Chandler just coasting to victory. Lunsford is making huge gains, and I expect a negative air war in the near future to drag both of them down.

I agree with TR here, Chandler has scarcely little to worry about. The name is revered in KY. Not to say that I don't hope Mr. Lunsford takes a big chunk out of Ben heading into the general ! :-)

It's official:

"Stephen B. Pence, who last week resigned as U.S. attorney for western Kentucky, was registered as the running mate of Republican candidate Ernie Fletcher, according to forms filed with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance."
