Dear Ms. *****,
Thank you for your e-mail. As you might imagine, we disagree with Lawrence Eagleburger's characterization of his recent dealings with our Op-Ed page.
The Op-Ed department publishes pieces that express a wide variety of opinions and our Op-Ed staff tries very hard to reach out to writers who disagree with the editorial opinions of the paper. Since we've published at least 20 pieces by outside writers supporting the Bush war plan over the last few weeks, we obviously do not limit our contributors to those who are critical of the administration.
Mr. Eagleburger has written for our Op-Ed page in the past. Recently, he was quoted in papers other than the Times as being critical of the administration's actions leading up to the war. One of our editors asked him if he wanted to elaborate on those comments in an article and he declined. Soon thereafter, he asked us if he could submit another article on Iraq and diplomacy, and we encouraged him to do so. Unfortunately, he never turned in the piece.
I hope this answers your questions. Sincerely, Gail Collins

Since we've published at least 20 pieces by outside writers supporting the Bush war plan over the last few weeks, SS. 20 pieces compared to how many pro leftist articles, letters and opinion pieces, then include the anti- republican pieces. Another ignorant leftie!

Eagleburger: NY Times Asked Me to Trash Bush
Former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger revealed late Wednesday that the New York Times recently asked him to write an essay on the Iraq war - but only on the condition that he would be critical of the Bush administration.
"About ten days ago I was approached by the New York Times to write an op-ed piece," Eagleburger told Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes." "When I talked to them about it I was told, 'What we want is criticism of the administration.'"
"They told you that?" asked an incredulous Sean Hannity.
"Yes, right out, flat out," Eagleburger replied. "He told me, 'We want criticism of the administration.'
"Needless to say," the former secretary of state added, "I did not write the op-ed piece."

If Eagleberger had really been critical of the Administration; the New York Rag Times would have been shouting it from every rooftop they could find.

What's funny is that it took him so long to figure out he was being used by the left-wing media. Now, if only McCain could understand this.....

Did you hear Kissinger several days after the Eagleberger comment? Kissinger was misquoted in an article they did on the Bush Administration. He wrote a letter to the editor to complain. They wanted to edit his letter, Kissinger refuses to allow the letter to be published as they edited it.

our Op-Ed staff tries very hard to reach out to writers who disagree with the editorial opinions of the paperRight. They publish one op-ed piece that is microscopically to the right of Lenin and then a whole slew of letters to the editor that trash it to bits for being too far right.

The issue is: who does one believe the NYT or Eagleburger. My vote is Eagleburger hands down.
