Some Voices From the War on Saturday
.c The Associated Press
Some voices Saturday from the war on Iraq:
``I'm an American soldier, too,'' Army Pfc. Jessica Lynch, responding to U.S. special forces who stormed an Iraqi hospital to rescue the POW.
``Either he's alive, and giving really bad direction to his armed forces, or he's dead and they're making things up as they go.'' - Marine Corps Gen. Peter Pace, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on President Saddam Hussein and the Iraqi military campaign.
``We were able to chop off their rotten heads.'' - an Iraqi military statement claiming their fighters turned back Americans as they tried to move into Baghdad from the south.
``They are cowards. They cannot face us on the ground. They control the sky, but we are able to confront whoever goes on the ground.'' - a man who claimed to be a member of the Fedayeen, speaking to the Al-Arabiya Arab satellite channel.
``It's like a jihad. They were given a rifle and told to become a martyr.'' - Marine Lt. Col. B.P. McCoy, whose unit engaged in close-quarters fighting on the outskirts of Baghdad with pro-Saddam volunteers from Jordan, Egypt, Sudan and elsewhere.
``The tragedy has rocked the very foundation of the Hopi reservation.'' - Hopi Tribal Chairman Wayne Taylor, on 23-year-old Pfc. Lori Ann Piestewa, a Hopi who was the first American woman to die in combat in Iraq.
