3rd Moves Into Central Bagdad-Casualities

MSNBC announced about 30 minutes ago that we have many troops on the way to the heart of Bagdad. It has been planned strategically all along. Meeting sporadiac resistance and Centcom said the number of casualities are unkown at this time.

Arnot reported about 40 minutes ago they had gone into one Guard headquarters in the city, it was abandoned, citizens said as early as this morning their time. There are hundreds of logged photos of the Guard and Arnot said he had a vial in his hand of white powder, but he didn't know what it was.

As far as center goes, I've heard it referred to as Central Bagdad, Downtown Bagdad, near the heart of the City and now Centcom said City Center, I thought the briefing was 6AM CST, so hopefully it will all be explained.

Arnot is an idiot. The gaurd headquarters he is in is 30
miles south of the airport. Nowhere near the city.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- U.S. soldiers and tanks are operating in the heart of Baghdad and encountering sporadic resistance, 17 days after the war in Iraq began, a U.S. Central Command spokesman said Saturday.

This is what I just got:

In the Iraqi capital, "our efforts are very opportunistic," Navy Capt. Frank Thorp said. "As we see an opportunity to move forward, to move into an area, we take it and move forward into that area and that's what's got us overnight into the city of Baghdad."

The Army's V Corps moved into the city from the south. The 1st Marine Expeditionary Force came in from the southeast.

"The 1st Marine Expeditionary Force has engaged the Al Nida Division of the Republican Guard and at this point we have penetrated that division," Thorp, a CentCom spokesman, said in Doha, Qatar.

Several tank units from the 2nd Brigade of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division rolled into the Iraqi capital earlier Saturday in what was described as a reconnaissance mission, CNN correspondent Walter Rodgers reported.

"It does appear very clearly from the maps we've seen that what the army is striving to do at this point is carve out chunks of the city," Rodgers said. "Bite off a chunk of Baghdad and then take that chunk and literally dismember the city zone by zone so that each of these zones falls under the control of the U.S. Army."
