Jessica took awful beating
New York Daily News ^ | 4/05/03 | OWEN MORITZ

Pfc. Jessica Lynch was beaten more severely than first reports indicated, doctors said yesterday.

Besides two broken legs and a broken arm, the 19-year-old Army truck driver suffered fractures to her right foot, right ankle and a disk in her spine, and had a gash on her head.

Lynch underwent spinal surgery Thursday to repair the fractured disk that had been pressing painfully on a nerve, doctors at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany reported yesterday.

"The prognosis for her recovery is excellent," said Col. David Rubenstein, the medical center commander.

Officials have refused to say why so many of Lynch's bones were broken, but it's likely she was tortured. An Iraqi man who told the Americans where to find her urged the troops to hurry, saying she was being tortured. He later described a scene where the helpless woman was being slapped by a black-clad member of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's thuggish Fedayeen.

Despite her ordeal, Lynch was in good spirits, asking for turkey, a pair of glasses and a newspaper from her hometown of Palestine, W.Va.

"Her emotional state is extremely good - she's jovial, she's talking with staff," Rubenstein said. He said she was particularly cheered by the pink casts she requested.

She will need "extensive rehabilitative services," he continued, but was expected to recover completely.

She's "a daughter any parent would be proud of," he added.

A friend from her unit is with her and has spoken by telephone with her family, Rubenstein said.

The military also accommodated a request from Lynch, who was being fed intravenously, for solid foods. From her list of favorites, cooks in the hospital kitchen delivered an order of turkey, apple sauce and steamed carrots.

The private has no television in her hospital room, on Rubenstein's orders. And Lynch's father back in the U.S. confirmed that doctors have asked him not to discuss her ordeal with her.

"We will answer her questions when she asks them," Rubenstein said.

Nine of 11 bodies discovered in the raid that freed Lynch are believed to be those of American soldiers. Those bodies were transported yesterday to Dover, Del.

The debate on this thread reminded me of a movie that came out several years ago. It starred Meg Ryan (I believe). Apparantly she was killed in a battle during Gulf War I and the movie was about the debate on whether to give her a postumus (sp?) Medal of Honor. I don't remember the outcome of the movie though...and I'd like to see it again. The only problem is I can't remember the name of the movie. Can anyone help me out on that? Thanks :-)

Agreed.

I pray Pfc Piestewa wasn't a single mother supporting those two pre-schoolers.

Tragic.

The dirty little secret, Luis, is that a man wouldn't have been alive and even if he was, that noble Iraqi wouldn't have accepted the threat to the lives of he and his family , walking many open miles to give away the location and status of a MALE American POW.

I think you're right.

And I find myself wondering what the woman from Arizona did differently - why she was killed and not spared like Pfc. Lynch. Obviously these people have no scruples when it comes to torturing and killing females (in a society that deems it acceptable to murder a woman when you think she's having an affair, that comes as no surprise).

But you're right. I don't think a man would have been done any extraordinary favors. (And I don't think people would be calling for a man in this exact circumstance to receive the Medal of Honor, either, to be honest about it.)

This is the saddest thing I have ever read.

I hear you. My heart is really broken over that.

I'm also rather upset that the men didn't make it.

You might try going here, searching for Meg Ryan, and checking out all her films and seeing if the name rings a bell.

Amen... the unrighteous, murderous, butchers of Baghdad have come up for judgement. The handwriting had been long on the wall but no one considered that the Lord is just; their evil only increased, until there was no remedy. Those who thought America was being judged by the acts of terrorists against us, ought to pause and understand that the sword of God is being swung by America. It is a time for the murderers to be judged, and let the rest tremble, and consider their own ways.

If the Seals and Rangers would have retreived Sgt. Joe Testosterone, it would never have made the news.

Bullshit.

The rescue of Private Lynch was a story of great interest and joy EXACTLY because she was a young FEMALE POW. If the Seals and Rangers would have retreived Sgt. Joe Testosterone, it would never have made the news.

This is the first rescue of an American POW since WW2. The soldier would be front page news regardless of gender, race or age.

The rescuers would also be famous, except for the fact that we don't release the names of Special Forces soldiers.

I CAHHHNOT change the laws of successful evolutionary societal gender role adaptations, Captain.

A society can't pick and choose which societal 'law' we enforce - that's why multi-cultural ideas crash and burn. The societal model our country was based on came from the bible, now it's unlawful to post the 10 commandments in public. Our country rejected the societal plan where men protect women.

For the last 30 years women have been pushing away men as their protector in society as a whole. The women of this country are using government to replace men, turning men into nothing more than a paycheck in the eyes of the courts.

Until we have balance back between the roles of the sexes, I no longer support giving women special treatment where they do not have all the responsibilities that come with full and equal treatment under the law. No, that's not a game plan for a successful society, but that's the course that voting women have set for this country. Until the pendulum swings far enough that the illogic of our present course becomes clear to the soccer moms, I don't care to make women an elite class within our society.

Thanks...the movie was Courage Under Fire and also starred Denzel Washington. I wasn't sure if it was Meg Ryan or not in the movie because it's been so long since I've seen it, but it turns out that it was her. Once again...thanks for the tip.

I'm guessing that this movie wasn't that good because I don't remember much about it, but I'm gonna watch it this weekend.

Nobody has EVER been rescued, in all these years, from enemy captivity?

Maybe some guys who rescued other guys from enemy clutches in Korea, VietNam, Somalia or the bowels of Cambodia didn't have a FOX embed with them? Maybe they didn't make it back to the nearest Satellite uplink.

This was not a prison camp.

I'm with you all the way on the tribunal thing. I do want to see a fair trial that sees actual perps convicted and fried, if they are guilty. I don't want to find out later political rivals trumped up unfounded charges.

I too lament the British and their aversion to the death penalty for the likes of some of these people. Death would be too good for them IMO. None the less, the world should be rid of them, not supporting them for thirty or more years.

As for Basra, I'm not sure it would have been wise to storm it. Until it was obvious that Baghdad was going to fall, the Iraqi forces there would have fought with more fervor. Now they are wanting to surrender.

I don't blame the British forces for cultivating that environment rather than sacrifice men to get the same results. Bottling up Basra was enough at the time IMO.

Brian, in the last 24 hours they have confirmed that she was shot. I know this has gone back and forth, but the doctors confirmed it to the dad and he told the press. As late as thirty minutes ago FoxNews announced it again in coverage of her ordeal.

When society doesn't follow the plan laid out by the bible, there is oppression.

Conditions Harsh for Zibundi Women

In Zibundi, any woman can be thrown in prison for the simple crime of annoying a man. If a man says a woman raised her voice at him, she is imprisoned, and has her children taken from her. Often, she never sees the children again. She is forced into slavery, and her earnings go to the man who had her enslaved.

Mock trials are used where bogus information is presented before a judge. The judge is fully aware that the information is false, but uses that to force adherence to laws that have themselves been determined illegal.

If their labor fails to produce the prescribed results, they are punished more harshly.

There is an ongoing public campaign to vilify and denigrate these women. All news and entertainment is geared towards portraying these women as low-life scum, deserving their predicament. Nearly all of Zibundi society agrees the women are treated fairly and properly. Their pleas for mercy are ignored.

Their children are usually abused and suffer serious and lifelong consequences. They are taught to hate their mothers, and told it is her fault they suffer.

The female children who survive to adulthood are typically forced into slavery as well. The husbands have children with other women, and the slave women have their burden increased to pay for the man's other children. The man's new wife must please him continuously or face the same fate.

The men threaten the women with having their children taken from them and forced into slavery if she opposes his demands. Even the richest men force a woman to give her meager earnings to him.

Falling ill relieves her of no duties, despite her being subjected to conditions likely to cause illness. Most of these women just want to see their children, but are ignored. All of this is done with the agreement of the Zibundi government.

Where is Zibundi? Surprise! It's not called Zibundi, it's called America. And it's not women subjected to these conditions, it is men.

I thought that they had corrected the earlier reports of gunshot wounds and stab wounds, stating that she had not been shot or stabbed. Am I wrong? This is such a big story, that the reports are coming in fast and furious and often wrong.

I don't know about this story, I'm sure it will all come out eventually. I do know that the fog of war is thick and we probably won't know the 'real' story until it is all over.

disclaimer: "I'm tired of women having a special status in this country - they, for the most part, don't deserve such treatment."

ArneFufkin: I'm going out to watch a band tonight. I'm going to give that exact pickup line a try.

Lucky for me I'm married to a real Christian woman - good luck out there, you'll need it.
