WASHINGTON (AP) U.S. military officials have taken the unusual step of removing a Marine unit's commander in the midst of the fighting in Iraq.
Col. Joe W. Dowdy was removed as commander of the 1st Marine Regiment, one of the Marine units approaching Baghdad from the southeast. The unit has about 5,000 troops.

As a former Marine officer I can tell you it is very unusual for a regimental c.o. to be relieved, especially in the field. I can't imagine what could have happened. Were any of his Marines involved in friendly fire incidents?

exactly my sentiment ... you know all the trouble Barry McCaffrey kicked up since he didn't get the Joint Chiefs job he was promised by Sick & Algore.

During Bob Arnot's reporting of a skirmish on thursday morning ( Iraq Time ), I think this is the Col., on the air, gave his name, rank, unit and location. He did it a couple of times. I couldn't believe he did that. Whether that was the reason he was releived, I don't know.

I've heard it rumored that this MAY be related to the drowning incident of two Marines who were ordered to cross the Saddam Canal.
I served with one of the fallen Marines, and I hope the investigation and resulting actions, whether this is related or not, can prevent future tragedies.
