In the Sahara during the North Africa Campaign the Brits (me late neighbor being one of them) would have the bagpipers pipe during the dark of night. They usually could get the Italians to run, and even sometimes of the Germans. Imagine being holed up in the bleak desert and hearing the pipes wailing away. Another thing he said they would do is to sleep buried in the sands during the day, breathing thru tubes. The sand kept them cool and hidden. So he said.
That is an absolutely awesome account! This would be wonderful!!! God bless the Brits!
He was an interesting character. "Engineer of the Year" in New Jersey one year. Planted a privet hedge on our boundary the year before he cashed in -- I asked him who would be trimming my side of it? He promised he would, and his widow sure enough does (if I don't first).
The dad of my neighbor the one house next to his was also Scot-English. He saw the Germans bombing of Scotland in WWI, when he was a kid. Dirgibles.
