Judging from the level of intelligence of some of these reporters, fixed wing might mean to them they were broken once.

U.S. is using fixed wing aircraft in close urban combat support. Smart bombs, very precise. The 10,000 or so Spec. Ops + the troops on the ground in Baghdad are able to call for air support when they discover "targets of opportunity" and pockets of resistance. (I think...geeze, 17 days and I'm opining on military stuff, lol!)
