A Million Mogadishus

Assistant Professor Nicholas De Genova, a glittering diamond in the intellectual crown that is Columbia University in the City Of New York is too scared to show up to teach his classes. He's received threats of violence, reports the New York Sun, and so have other professors who participated in the Saddam pep rally held last Wednesday in Low Memorial Library on the Columbia campus.

I'm glad De Genova is scared. He probably didn't realize that declaring war on America isn't without risk. From all the evidence, besides being vicious, De Genova is enormously stupid. It's a wonder that he is sentient enough to recognize the peril he has placed himself in. It's unlikely that he has yet figured out that he will never be able to cross a street in New York City--or anywhere else--without wondering whether a SUV or equivalent is bearing down on him to crush his bones. He will never venture out at night with the confident expectation that he is going to return to his residence without a fractured skull, a face smashed beyond surgical repair. I doubt that he realizes that he will never be able to use a credit card, not one bearing
his name.

Soon, it may dawn on De Genova that although he was only exercising his First Amendment rights by declaring his wish for America's military defeat in Iraq and his hope that we suffer "a million Mogadishus," there are those among us who think he has thereby forfeited any right to protection from the palpable wrath of those citizens whose violent death he champions. De Genova and many of the professorate who performed at that grotesque carnival masquerading as a "teach-in" were clear that they regard this country as a criminal conspiracy. And we, the rest of us, are criminals.

It is not peace they seek, but our punishment as criminals.

They claim the entitlements of a decent society, but they refuse to be bound by any of the restraints that a decent society requires. They claim the rights of free speech granted by a compact they have no regard for. It means nothing to them that the Congress and the President authorized this war; during six hours of their convocation this was never mentioned. They pay no mind to the elections held last November.

Nor does it seem to have reached the eminent academics on the podium that their public behavior encourages the continuation of this war, and more than likely will add to its bloodiness. I confess I'm not overly concerned with Iraqi casualties. I am an American. I'm primarily concerned with American casualties. I am concerned about the safety of our soldiers and the feelings of their families. Those who have no such concern for their countrymen ought to take off for places more congenial to them; Havana and Pyongyang come to mind.

When De Genova called not for the establishment of peace but for the defeat of America, for a million Mogadishus, not a voice was heard in dissent. The crowd--the mob--applauded hisremarks. It is proof of their baseness. Shame, shame on all of them. May they never have another day of peace.

When I returned from Vietnam I went straight to college. GI bill was paying the way and I wanted to be a doctor. I never recieved the "endoctrination" because I was in a pre-med major. My grades allowed me to pick and chose electives. Aside from my 14 hours of solid science each semester, and working a full time job, the University informed me that I MUST start fulfilling my "elective" responsibility. I outlined an elective program for myself and presented it to an "advisor". She looked at the schedule and was taken aback. You see, I had outlined a schedule full of pre-law courses. I had also studied the University requirements for elective courses, all it stated was that elective courses had to be "outside" of your major course requirements. She stated that I was absolutely required to take a 3 hour "arts" course. She also noted that with my GPA I could pretty much take any "arts" course that I wanted. I chose "Introduction to Film" I figured that would be benign enough to make it through the semester without seeing a marxist (marxists don't do science, they can't play, they have a very shallow intellect and no analytic skills).

Well, sure enough, the prof in that class was an out, and out commie. We were treated to a plethera of french films and one soviet film. I was so tired of reading subtitles by the end of that class. I was Aceing the class because I needed to keep my GPA at a 4.0. I regurgitated what he wanted to hear. For the final he assigned a paper. The topic "What films influenced your life to this date".

Ah, my final blow to this little commie. Well, I decided that I'd pretty much had enough of this little commie, so I wrote a 20 page, single spaced, thesis on the effect on American culture of the Three Stooges. I stayed awake nights watching and taking notes, I looked up articles in the library, I interviewed people, I hit the bricks running and I wrote the best I could. To make this long story short, I recieved an A in that course. I must have blown the little commie's socks off. The next semester he was including Three Stooges "shorts" in his class. This is another example of the intellectually lame left. You see, my paper was a joke, a long, funny joke, but he plagerized my joke. The commie prof though it was an intellectual work of art. Then I went back to my serious studies and was comfortable in my science and a little law, and the fact that I had kicked a commie butt with the logic that God had given me.

The commies were on campus then. I didn't want to be distracted by these idiots. I needed all the study time I could get. One night I was studying in the drom's commons. There was a loud discussion about Vietnam, against the war and anti American. They had moved in after I had started studying. When it got too uncomfortable to me, I packed up and started to leave. One comment by the group boiled my blood, I can't state exactly the words, it was a long time ago, but I stood my ground for the first time, in a long time. I walked toward the group and I said, "You will NOT desecrate the memories of the fine men that fought for this country in my presence. I am a veteran of Vietnam, I was a "doc" and a Ranger in that war. I saw more courage in one day than you will see in a lifetime. Have the common decency to wait for me to leave the room before you spew your filth at my brothers that saved my life. Have the respect of their lives, and mine, to leave this alone. I have a goal, I have to study, I have no time for politcal statements, I want to be a doctor. Leave your politics at the door if I'm in here. I'll leave if you come in, that's fair enough".

From that day forward I was treated "different". Sometimes good "different", sometimes "bad" different, but at least I had let it out and I could do what I came there to do, get my education and save lives.

Good on you. I used to be a mindless anti-war protester during my college years in the 60's and have since awakened to the real world and married a VN combat vet and send Stolen Valor to all my friends as often as I can afford Burkett's book. Thank you for your service.
