Kelly may be dead, but he is up there with Ernie Pyle, and the spirit which he revived lives on.

This is really sad news. Michael Kelly was a great writer, one whose work I looked for virtually every day.

This is sad. I received the latest issue of the Atlantic Monthly just yesterday and I saw his article there. He wrote it from Kuwait. The Atlantic Monthly is a great magazine and he is a very, very good writer.

RIP, Michael Kelly.

Peter Arnett better write well
And beware every lie that he tell,
For two scribes with more style
Named Mauldin and Pyle*
Can't wait to escort him to hell.

*...and Kelly makes three

Kelly was occasionally great. Maybe it is a misuse of the adjective but I found his "Old, Old, Tired, Tired" to be Churchillian in its eloquence. It is the best thing I have read of the millions of words regarding September 11th, 2001. If you haven't read it, you must.
But then recently I got into an email dustup with Kelly about his interest in cavalierly shipping billions to Africa without what I thought proper surety.
I pray for his wife and kids. I'm sure he must have been a wonderful father.

Tony Snow on Fox said Kelly leaves a young family behind. He was at one time considered a liberal until the Clinton years, then he become more unnattached politically in his articles.

Snow said Kelly wrote the kind of stories he (Snow) wished he had written.

Snow commented Kelly would not give up his principles in his stories especially the story he had penned on Gore. The Republic took issue with the story. Differences then caused Kelly's exodus to the Atlantic Monthly.

Kelly was asked to appear several times on Fox turning them down, wanting to just remain a journalist in the streets anywhere in the world doing what few reporters still do.

Snow described Kelly as a very moral man in all aspects of his life. Snow gave his sympathy to the family of Michael Kelly.
