Kelly was one of the good guys. He started off calling President Bush a "pinhead" but then came to admire him. He was sending great dispatches from Iraq.

RIP

Yes, Michael Kelly was a columnist for the WP, among other things.

God rest his soul.

A fine man and a great writer. One of the few decent people in a profoundly corrupt profession. God rest his soul.

And for heaven's sake, let's keep Mark Steyn away from Iraq.

He was a regular guest on the Hugh Hewitt show (KRLA 870 AM). Brilliant and insightful. He had a calm way of portraying the demorats for their scandalous ways and especially dashole for being a divisive obstructionist. He backed up his view with carefully researched Washington insight. A great loss to the conservative cause.

As a columnist, Kelly was a caustic conservative who was merciless in his criticism of Bill Clinton and Al Gore and was generally supportive of President Bush, especially on foreign policy.

Little Howie couldn't resist the cheap shot.

I never categorized Michael Kelly as "conservative". In fact, I believe that he was basically a liberal who became extremely disappointed and disillusioned with Clinton/Gore and the DemocRATs blind loyalty to them.

FWIW, CNN just reported that he died in a Humvee "accident".

God Rest His Soul.

Now lets move on. I'm sorry but the media tends to treat the death of one of their own in a distasteful and self-aggrandizing manner. I know this sounds cold. I really do feel for him and his family.

However, those troops out there are dying for ME. And YOU. Not to bring prize-winning pictures. For US. Poor Jessica Lynch's body was broken for US. Her fellows executed (crucified) for US.

It's just come home to me in a very personal way what these fine men and women are doing for me. It is a thing most wonderful.

Hugh Hewitt's program today will be a tribute to Michael Kelly (www.hughhewitt.com). Barnes, Kondracke, Kurtz and Eastland will all participate.

I am in AWE at our young soldiers - they are so brave and have shown such acts of humanity in the midst of madness. God bless each and every one of them.

I think the reason the press sometimes goes overboard when it's one of their own is because they know each other. Much the same way I felt when I heard Barbara Olson was killed on 9/11 - it really hit home then. But I understand your point entirely.

I think you have a good point. I felt awful on 9/11 -- too stunned at first to cry -- but the moment I cried was when I heard Barbara Olson died. Because I "knew" her through her writing and TV appearances. Death then had a "face" that day. So it is with Michael Kelly, I feel the loss in knowing I will never again read his columns or hear him call Hugh Hewitt's show. I'm terribly sad about it. But it doesn't in any way mean I feel his loss is more significant than each of our brave men and women who are actually fighting this war.

I am in absolute *awe* of our military. I have watched what they are doing (thanks in part to the embedded reporters giving us that chance) and can't even *imagine* the courage it takes to put their lives on the line as they are. My gratitude and admiration for all these men and women knows no bounds.
