JACKSONVILLE, FL - American's are pouring out support for the troops fighting in Iraq and the First Coast is no exception. From yellow ribbons and bumper stickers signs of support are everywhere. For local rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd , the band has decided to sing their support.
The southern rock legends have written a new song called Red, White, and Blue about the United States and the song was given its worldwide debut on local radio Tuesday morning. Those who have heard it, including DJ's Lex and Terry, say it's a fantastic song and long time fans couldn't agree more. Said one long time fan, "that particular song brought me to tears. It absolutely typifies everything America stands for."
Response to the song has been overwhelming and caller after caller to Lex and Terry's show have said it makes them proud and gives them chills.
Lex and Terry say they were honored to be the first to get to play it and according to Terry James, "I think its great especially when the song turned out to be that good. I had no idea that the audience was going to respond to it as well as they did."
While the song debuted on a rock station, the band hopes the song will go nationwide and across every musical format in the weeks to come. Meanwhile, the single for Red, White, and Blue should be in stores sometime next week.

I imagine there's still a place for Natalie Maines as a backup singer in some Seattle grunge band.

I think its nice that the surviving members recorded this song, but it ain't Skynyrd without Ronnie.

You should listen to some of their new music. It is really good. Most of the members are original and the singer is Ronnies brother.

Not really. Most of the group, which had Top Ten hits in the 1970s like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird", died in a plane crash a long time ago. The band here is probably just the surviving spare parts and some new members.
As rock trivia, the band took their name from a gym teacher's name in high school who was "Leonard Skinner". They stylized it and adapted it as the band's name.

That's right, Donnie Van Zandt, former lead singer of .38 special.

No Steve Gaines, No Allan Collins, No Ronnie Van Zandt, No Skynyrd. But then I'm a stickler. I say The Who died with Moonie.

How 'bout that, a band who once recorded a song in which they said we should dump all guns in the ocean has realized that you need to fight sometimes...

I'm with you. I had the pleasure of seeing the real thing in Miami 2 nights before the plane crash, and then later, Rossington-Collins their first month on tour.
The current lineup should be called some abbreviation of Skynyrd-Outlaws-Blackfoot...Maybe the S.O.B.s for short!
To: Rebelbase
Ahh, Rossington-Collins, now THAT was a great band, and the true heirs to the Skynyrd spirit (but still not the name).

Actually, I think Ronnie Van Zant was the only "original" member of the group who died in the plane crash. Allan Collins later had a bad motorcycle accident and went into a deep depression and ended up dying by drugs or something. In the late 80's the band had a fallilng out with original drummer Artemus Pyle.
