Thanks for those pictures, these are my babies, I was in on the turnover from M-60 A3's to the M1A1 tank, and I have been in love with them ever since.

I am in outside sales, I have a large flag lapel pin on my Left lapel, and a silver M1A1 lapel pin on my Right.

I love these beasts, they are one of the most powerful weapons in the world, and I am proud of the fact that I have worked on them, driven them and fired them. They are incredible.

Thanks for such a wonderful article and pictures...

The perfect person to ask a question then. The M1 appears to have a large shot trap under the turret, is the armor thick enough in the area there that this is considered inconsequential?

Since you were on them during the turnover, I suppose you remember all the negative press BS they got in the late 70's early 80's? Man, that used to drive my Dad bugscrew. He was in Liason at the time, taking congress critters out to demo and explain weapons systems.

He'd come home from work, take a gawk at a Pravda West (Wash Post) article on them, and exclaim "I sure hope the Russians buy all this Horse s***. If they do they are gonna be in for a BIG surprise when\if they ever go up against it". :)

Has an M1 ever been destroyed by enemy fire? I am under the impression that one has not been taken out in a hard kill by another main battle tank, can you clarify?

...."these are my babies..."

ME TOO! Ah...a fellow D.A.T. !!

I went through the Armor Officers Advanced Course at Fort Knox in 1993 and the M1A1 Tank Commander's Course that same year as well. I dearly love the machine known as "Whispering Death." I was a branch transfer after spending ten years as an Infantry Officer. I'm a teacher now, but every time I see the M1A1 thunder across the desert, my heart rides with them. God knows I tried to get my commission back after 9-11. Thanks for the pics, I have sent the link to my fellow former tankers. Aric2000: You can explain what a D.A.T. is if you like...lol
