WASHINGTON - American rockets pounded Iraq's elite Republican Guard, which was heading south from Baghdad today in a desperate bid to protect the capital, military sources said.

"In a day of sweeping successes, the Army's 101st Airborne Division took control of the city of An Najaf following days of heavy fighting and was greeted by crowds of cheering Iraqis - a sure sign that Saddam Hussein is losing his brutal grip on the country."

The 20,000-man Marine force faced its stiffest resistance as it neared the Tigris River near AlKut.
Troops of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines were crossing a bridge over the Saddam Canal believing there was no resistance when they were ambushed by Republican Guard units dug into trenches and bunkers.
The force responded with massive firepower from Cobra attack helicopters, tanks and artillery fire, which killed more than 100 Iraqi defenders, said reporters embedded with the units.
Bob Arnot was live on the phone with MSNBC tonight while all this was going on... it was some of best live coverage I have heard so far, it was almost like being there with them. An Iraqi family actually jumped into the foxhole with him. (the is a least 1 thread that was made while all this was going on tonight, and also the daily war thread people were following it)
MSNBC said they were video taping it also and will try to release it later.
