Pfc. Jessica Lynch, rescued Tuesday from an Iraqi hospital, fought fiercely and shot several enemy soldiers after Iraqi forces ambushed the Army's 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company, firing her weapon until she ran out of ammunition, U.S. officials said yesterday.

P.S. This is why we lost more people in the Civil War than all the other wars since combined.

I won't disagree with you that Americans can fight very fiercely (which was your point), but I can't let this pass.

We suffered such huge casualties in the Civil War, compared to subsequent wars, because
(a) tactics lagged far behind technological improvements (e.g., men were still "massed" in the antiquated way, and moved too slowly, too close to artillery fire);
(b) wounded men had only the most primitive medical care (by WWI, medical technology had improved greatly);
(c) even more men died from combined effects of contagious diseases and malnutrition than from combat. Food poisoning was very common and continued to be so through the Spanish-American War, but less so after that.

Reports I read are that the military had heard of her exploits from Iraqis prior to her recovery. Unconfirmed, but it seems that the Iraqis were surprised and impressed by her actions. In time, we'll gain a beter understanding of the accuracy of that report.

To all who argue over whether she qualifies as a hero or not, it would help to understand the true dfinition of hero rather than a perceived definition of the word. From the Merriam-Webster dictionary...

She qualifies at least in part unser 2b, and 4 as a hero. So do Michael Jordan, Eminem, and many others. She is the central figure in a POW recovery, and the central figure of great debate right now. There are many who admire her and idolize her right now. She has told family that she wants to finish her term of service in the military. This is a very tough young woman, blessed to be from rural America where values and families are still strong. Her close family and close community in her upbringing gave her the foundation that helped to make her strong. Solid genetics probably helped, too. Hell, I'm male, wear size 15 shoes and a size 14 ring. Big, powerful, and I admire her and see her as something of a role model. She has come through a personal hell, yet after her ordeal, she still feels a sense of responsibility to serve her country. I don't give a damn what anyone says, she is literally a hero by definiton. The people who were involved in her rescue are each and every one heroes as well. We may never know their names, and they may never get the recognition they deserve. For that, I am sorry, but I believe that Jessica deserves nothing but support. The experience she has been through is something many of us here could not and would not have weathered as well. I doubt they were giving her anything for pain, and I doubt she was allowed to lay quietly on a nice soft bed during her time as a POW. Two broken legs, a broken arm, at least one gunshot wound, and from talk radio last night possibly a stab wound as well. And minimal, if any medical care. Regardless of personal opinions over the validity of women in combat, she was there, she did her job, she got something a lot worse than a lousy t-shirt, and she's not ready to quit. If you cannot respect her for that, and if you still want to argue peripheral issues, then you may have a problem that needs professional or divine help.

She does and he's in the Army, and her little sister has already signed up to enlist, and despite what happened to her sister can't wait to serve her country. I'd say that courage runs in the family.
