The Washington Post ^ | April 3, 2003 | Susan Schmidt and Vernon Loeb

Posted on 04/02/2003 7:40:30 PM PST by John H K

Pfc. Jessica Lynch, rescued Tuesday from an Iraqi hospital, fought fiercely and shot several enemy soldiers after Iraqi forces ambushed the Army's 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company, firing her weapon until she ran out of ammunition, U.S. officials said yesterday.

They're the same group that makes Oprah a hero and forgets Martin Luther King.

That's just such total b*** s***. If you really don't think this woman was heroic, then at least have the decency to STFU about it. You're opinion and the similar yappings of others are so totally useless and derogatory during this time of war that it's really makes some of us wonder about your agenda.

I've been on around 20 of these threads. Show me.

Pretend I'm from Missouri.

I'm aware of women in the Israeli combat units in the early days and I know Israeli men who fought alongside them in the Yom Kippur war and I know why they stopped. Mainly for two reasons....the men were distracted when women were wounded or could not keep up and the nation decided they did not like the societal repercussions. They still train women for combat roles and police activity just in case they are "in the weeds" again.

Yes, there were women snipers in Stalingrad...one was an ace sniper as I recall. There were also women combat pilots at the end of WWII in the USSR. Perilous times and desperation in a G-dless collectivist nation....not a very good example to me.

Partisans and guerrilas have always used women to a degree.

I don't recall women in Afghanistan or Chechnya.

I have been in a number of war zones of incredibly brutal dimensions from West Africa to Latin America. I saw very few women irregulars and no female govenment troopers.

I wonder why. I guess we are more enlightened.

I am not angry, I realize that some people are so pathetic that they cannot acknowledge bravery in others. Is she a hero? Maybe, maybe not. Was she brave, yes. Obviously she was a helpless victim after she was wounded in battle multiple times and then captured. The same could be said of anyone male or female who was wounded so seriously. No one outside of your own mind is claiming she acting bravely during the rescue, we are saying she acted bravely when she stood and fought against her attackers. Is it not possible for you to comprehend that both she and those who rescued her deserve some respect?

You are obviously not in the service

OK, well, since you obviously know all and see all, I should do what? Cry? LOL

I have been shot at. I served until Jan 20th, 1993. When I resigned due to the election of WJBC IV.

My opinion is just as valid as yours.

That would be moral relativism.

Your opinion is not just as valid as mine or as anyone else’s.

What you have done here, as all liberals do, is mistaken your right to have and express an ignorant opinion, as being the same as having an equal opinion.

Your opinion is not equal to mine.

Only your right to offer an opinion is equal.

And I think the consensus of the group would be that you are full of it.

That is probably true of most but I see a few that are older women.

All the genuine combat vets I know on this forum think women is combat ia lunacy at worst and a foolish indulgence at best.

Heroism is not what we make it. It is, self evident. And the evidence supports the conclusion.

That statement is absurd. You have no evidence that this woman is a hero. In fact, we have every bit of evidence that she was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and she was injured severely and became a victim, helpless and crying. I feel very sorry for her, but I fear that just because she has an interesting "story" she will make the tours of the TV programs and people like you will call her a hero, and again the real heroes of our military will be forgotten.

Some things are not opinion, they are fact. If this report turns out to be true, then by definition, she is not a helpless victim. Go to dictionary.com and look up helpless and maybe you will understand. A helpless person does not shoot back. Also, quite frankly, your opinion in this matter is not as valid as the opinions of those of us who are willing to acknowledge Jessica's bravery. The Taliban had opinions, that doesn't mean they were as valid as mine or yours. Fortunately for you, men and women (little boys and girls to you) have died fighting (in your language they were helpless victims) so that you can have whatever opinion you want, and no one, I least of all, can or would try to do anything to keep you from having those opinions. The fact that no one can stop you from having and expressing those opinions doesn't make you any less pathetic.

ROFLMAO !!! my dear, its YOU that must be a liberal. Because its YOU that is arguing so strenuously in favor of women in the military.

so funny!

You certainly don't sound like any military man I know. I disagree with you and automatically you call me names, and attack. You may have served alright, but for what country? Give me a break.

Tell me, why should standards be different for women?

I never said they should.

I've been there too.

I think she is lucky(very, very)to be alive and brave. She was fired upon and fired back, was taken prisoner and survived. She is a hero in a relative sense.

Meanwhile, there are right now 100s or 1000s of young men on the front being shot at and firing back. They have the same credibility as her.

I am against women in the military beyond no risk support roles. I want them off ships and out of the academies...and yes I know that baring a cataclysm that I'm dreaming on the last one in particular.

Being conservative does not mean always being popular. I'm rabidly anti-abortion too although I know it will take a miracle to stop that but that's not going to change my view either.

I don't like women in the academies (I've seen firsthand the damage at VMI), on ships (where the problems are well known) or in risk areas of combat.

I agree.

Heh-heh I love the way you put that. I was trying to express the same thing, but you put it much better, I was looking for the word moral relativism but it is late and I am tired. I definately agree with the consensus.

You may have served alright, but for what country?

Did you serve? I didn't - but I'll tell you, no matter how much someone who did might ever have ticked me off, this is a question I never would have asked.

Absolutely, positively below-the-belt.

I'm throwing a flag on that one.

I can't remember who posted it early in this thread, but someone said that we need more she-grizzlies in our military. It reminded me of my daughter's favorite Yu-Gi-Oh! card, "Mother Grizzly":

Like they say on the show, "It's time to DUEL!"

I will not forget them either or any of the POWs.

BTW, the female snipers to which I refered to are the 2000 Russians of WWII and the IDF female snipers of present. IDF snipers are primarily trainers for special forces, not active combat at this time.

What a supremely arrogant statement.

She'd better get the Silver Star, She earned it. I really hope Department of the Army and DoD gets on the stick for this one. We may have one of the first real heroes to come out of this war, but, I suspect, it won't be the last.

BTW, anybody here besides me think 3-7 Cav deserves a PUC?
