Pfc. Jessica Lynch, rescued Tuesday from an Iraqi hospital, fought fiercely and shot several enemy soldiers after Iraqi forces ambushed the Army's 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company, firing her weapon until she ran out of ammunition, U.S. officials said yesterday.

And the creeps rewarded her by not feeding her for 8 days in that "hospital" she was in...(according to the Fox crawl). No wonder she looked so emaciated when she was rescued.

To a select few here, only when it is time to give her over to her husband. Yep, no fancy book learning at college for the little girl! Certainly no job, no military, nada. Keep her home til the state says you can marry her off and that is that.

I take your point. I assumed this account came from PFC. Lynch because she hadn't been declared a POW before her rescue and this information came out after her rescue (and I haven't read of any survivors who escaped the ambush).

We'll see what she has to say after they release what she tells her debriefers.

I don't know enough to form an opinion. Maybe she shot back I hope so. I assume she was being shot at.

I'm not sure what makes a hero anymore. We almost seem to believe being there is enough. Maybe it is. Maybe we should have levels of heroes. Say Audie Murphy, Nathan Hale or the guy who charged the machine gun nest to save his buddies on one end and folks who were captured, shot back, and survived somewhere down the hero ladder.

We have had plenty of women heroes in our history.

I fear I know exactly why she was not dead like the others...we all have that gnawing awareness as to why.

I am elated she survived...for her and her family.

None of that changes my view on women in combat.

It's bad tactically, strategically and for society as a whole and is precisely why no one hardly indulges in it.

Sure, I know what you are saying about medical teams. A good friend of mine's mom was a nurse in World War II. So what? That is a much different scenario.

Well, then, if people like you think its okay for women to be in combat then lets go all the way--lets have all women front line troops. Lets have a 101st Airborne that is mostly women. Why not? Lets do it.

That's right. Why spare those females? Lets go, lets roll.
Lets start recruiting more and more females. Those guys will be spared their lives, and they can let mommy fight the wars. Hmmmm, I'm beginning to see this has possiblities!

The first female to be awarded the Purple Heart was 1st Lt. Annie Fox, for wounds recieved at Pearl Harbor.

The was a female doctor in the Civil War who received the Congressional Medal of Honor. I think she is the only female to be so honored. Women have won virtually every medal since then; mostly in WWII and beyond.

If the threads are the norm of what passes for conservative thought in America today then you are outta gas. The support for "babes in battle" is about 75% here amongst posters.

This is a watershed cultural eye opener for me sort of like the "Lott Affair" was.

We have a boatload of cultural neo-cons here. (I hate that paleo/neo label crap because it is ill defining so please note I'm only referring to culture issues)
