Locked in

Recently I was a passenger in a new car with child-proof door locks. You can't get out until the driver says so. This applies to the front passenger also. Why?

Young children are supposed to be in the back, strapped and locked in. But a grown, mature person could easily become a captive if accepting a ride from a person with other than friendly intentions. You don't have a chance of getting away.

There's a switch on the door plating you can get to when the door is open, makesure it's not set to "child". Saddly most of this really stupid child safety crap in cars is actually from the manufacturer, though a lot of it is in response to whining from idiot parent groups (like the glow in the dark trunk latch so that if you kidnap somebody they'll be able to open the trunk and escape... serious chucklehead action).

What kind of car was it?

I'm sorry, I don't know, and the letter to the editor didn't say. (at least not that they published, the papers sometimes edit that stuff out to avoid their own liability headaches.) But I thought it was worthwhile posting anyway so that people can discuss their own experience with different car models.

I appreciate the discussion thread. I work in the auto industry and appreciate any input from customers not so connected with the industry. It is easy for automotive employees to lose touch with a typical customer.

they work. both in a Mitsubishi Montero and a Toyota Sienna van. If i lock the door from the do-hickey on my keyring, and my kids try to get out, it will set off the car alarm and i don't think they can get out. This was with my 14 yr old too, i had inadvertantly locked it that way, forgetting that it would cause a ruckus if she were to attempt to get out of the car.
