Martin Savidge of CNN, embedded with the 1st Marine battalion, was talking with 4 young Marines near his foxhole this morning live on CNN. He had been telling the story of how well the Marines had been looking out for and taking care of him since the war started. He went on to tell about the many hardships the Marines had endured since the war began and how they all look after one another. He turned to the four and said he had cleared it with their commanders and they could use his video phone to call home. The 19 year old Marine next to him asked Martin if he would allow his platoon sergeant to use his call to call his pregnant wife back home whom he had not been able to talk to in three months. A stunned Savidge who was visibly moved by the request shook his head and the young Marine ran off to get the sergeant. Savidge recovered after a few seconds and turned back to the three young Marines still sitting with him and asked which one of them would like to call home first, the Marine closest to him responded with out a moments hesitation “ Sir, if is all the same to you we would like to call the parents of a buddy of ours, Lance Cpl Brian Buesing of Cedar Key, Florida who was killed on 3-23-03 near Nasiriya to see how they are doing”. At that Martin Savidge totally broke down and was unable to speak. All he could get out before signing off was “Where do they get young men like this?”.

Hope any protesters watching CNN felt totally inadequate in the presence of such human decency.

My feelings exactly. I can only hope this story was actually run on CNN.

Please forgive the lapse - I know that as well as I know my name! When you marry a Marine you marry the Corps and you never become detached from it whether by honorable discharge or divorce!

The young men are obviously found in the United States of America. I read articles like this and hear heroic tales like that of the rescue of the POW, Jessica Lynch, and it makes me so proud of all of the men and women who are risking their lives fighting for the freedom of an oppressed people. I am a Canadian. Unfortunately we are not assisting in this cause, but this does not mean that some of us cannot be proud of all of those who are serving their country. You are all amazing people.

People lost their lives in order to save Jessica Lynch. It is truly awe inspiring to even get a glimpse through the embedded reporters of what these men and women do in the name of freedom.

Since the LT Smash is a Navy reservist, it's great social and political satire.

I've been reading his blog for about 2 months now. If you haven't checked out the archives, I urge you to read them. They're witty, touching, insightful, and inspiring. I never know if I'm going to laugh or cry, but I always feel lucky to be an American after reading it.

In 1996, an Air Force Col. passed away. Ordinarily not a big deal, except at his funeral there were more Marines than Zoomies and at the internment a Marine, a decorated warrior, stepped forward and placed the globe and anchor on his grave. Col. John Boyd hadn't done much in his career other than teach the AF how to fight aerial combat, how to design fighters (he was the driving force behind the f-16 and F-18) and finally he taught the Marines how to fight ground wars.

We find these men and women in all walks of life, some are polished by the Marines and other are polished by other abrasives, but they are Americans.

You don't "get" young men like this, you "make" young men like this. This is why Marine boot camp is about transformation from an identity of self to one of being a Marine. It's where you learn the meaning of "Esprit de Corps" and "Semper Fidelis". It's why we're proud to be called "Marine".

I've given this topic a LOT of thought, because variations on it have been rolling through my head for the past 6 months. LT's post finally helped me find the missing link and put it all together, especially when it was juxtaposed with the "transmission from Dad" that mentioned "My Ivy League Son."

LT, plus "My Ivy League Son" and "My Heart on the Line," plus Victor Davis Hanson's "Long Riders," plus my own experiences reading Roman history and hearing from military families as I covered the Maine Educators Incident... at last, the picture began to make sense.

"Where They Get Young Men Like This" brings all of those sources together to reveal an important pattern, one that matters a great deal to the future of America. Parts of it will make for disturbing reading - but in the end, there is hope. I'd be interested in your thoughts.

I think the training standards and techniques that the Marines use should be extended to all branches of the Military....not that each branch's military focus should change. I'm talking about the military ethos of the Marines. Instead of the "the few, the proud...", it should become the "The Many, the Proud, the US Military!

It would be nice to think that Martin Savidge was asking a rhetorical question. Unfortunately, I don't think he was. He, like most of the left-wing media elite, doesn't have a clue!

They are not at all in touch with what it means to be an American, and that the majority of American families raise children, men and women, just like these. Almost all Americans, and I'd like to think All military personnel, are similarly concerned about others.

Like another post indicated...this type of young man is Made In the USA.

When I heard Rush read the story on his program today, I teared up big time. I could not be more proud. I am just thankful that the original story was broadcast on CNN so that it went right to the heart of the anti-American crowd.
