My favorite line from the lyrics:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free.

The Battle Hymn of the Republic
Julia Ward Howe
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored,
He has loosed the fateful lightening of His terrible swift sword
His truth is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps
l can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps
His day is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnish`d rows of steel,
"As ye deal with my contemners, So with you my grace shall deal;"
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel
Since God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

I hope it is the old version instead of the new version so politically correct. LOL
I remember that Bush requested the old version for the memorial service after 9/11.

I went out on imesh (similar to kwaaza) a while back looking for versions of the battle hymn and the best two I found were by Elvis, and the Red Army Choir. Strange world we live in.

This part has alway brought tears to my eyes and I have them now as I post this. God is marching on!

Onward, Christian Soldiers
Words: Sabine Baring-Gould, 1865
Music: St. Gertrude, Arthur S. Sullivan, 1871
"Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.
Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe;
Forward into battle see His banners go!
(Refrain)
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.
At the sign of triumph Satans host doth flee;
On then, Christian soldiers, on to victory!
Hells foundations quiver at the shout of praise;
Brothers lift your voices, loud your anthems raise.
(Refrain)
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.
Like a mighty army moves the church of God;
Brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod.
We are not divided, all one body we,
One in hope and doctrine, one in charity.
(Refrain)
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.
What the saints established that I hold for true.
What the saints believèd, that I believe too.
Long as earth endureth, men the faith will hold,
Kingdoms, nations, empires, in destruction rolled.
(Refrain)
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.
Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane,
But the church of Jesus constant will remain.
Gates of hell can never gainst that church prevail;
We have Christs own promise, and that cannot fail.
(Refrain)
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.
Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng,
Blend with ours your voices in the triumph song.
Glory, laud and honor unto Christ the King,
This through countless ages men and angels sing.
(Refrain)
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before."
Thought this should be included also.

My high school chorus did a few numbers at a VFW Post's annual banquet. The usual polite smattering of applause when we finished each one. Then we sang this, in 4-part harmony. I got to do one of the verses solo. By the time we were done they were standing and cheering and crying.

From the bright sunny south to the war, I was sent, E'er the days of my boyhood, I scarcely had spent. From it's cool shady forests and deep flowing streams, Ever fond in my mem'ry and sweet in my dreams.
Oh, my dear little sister, I still see her tears. When I had to leave home in our tender years. And my sweet gentle mother, so dear to my heart, It grieved me sincerely when we had to part.
Said my kind-hearted father as he took my hand: "As you go in defence of our dear native land, "Son, be brave but show mercy whenever you can. "Our hearts will be with you, 'til you 'turn again."
In my bag there's a bible to show me the way, Through my twelfth year on earth and to Heaven some day. I will shoulder my musket and brandish my sword, In defence of this land and the word of the Lord.
