NEW YORK (Reuters) - Two journalists of New York's Newsday newspaper who disappeared from a Baghdad hotel a week ago while covering the Iraq war, have made contact with the daily and are safe, Newsday said on Tuesday.
Matthew McAllester, 33, and photographer Moises Saman, 29, crossed the border into Jordan on Tuesday and were safe and in good health, the newspaper said in a statement on Newsday.com.
McAllester telephoned Newsday foreign editor Dele Olojede at 1:06 pm EST to say the pair had been released by Iraqi authorities.
"They said they are well. They said there is nothing wrong with them," Olejede said to cheers in Melville, New York, newsroom on Long Island.

Newsday journalists Matthew McAllester and Moises Saman, who had been missing in Iraq since last week, crossed the border into Jordan today and said they were safe and in good health.
McAllester telephoned Newsday foreign editor Dele Olojede at 1:06 pm EST to say the two were fine.
"They said they are well. They said there is nothing wrong with them," Olejede said as cheers broke out in the Newsday newsroom.
The two had been missing since last Monday night. McAllester, a reporter, and Saman, a photographer, were covering the war for Newsday in Baghdad. They were believed to have been in the custody of Iraqi authorities.

We'll reserve that evaluation until after we've heard their stories. Why would Saddam have them released unless they are acting as a mouthpiece for Iraqi propaganda.

Bingo!
They are very young, and one has a ME sounding name. They were not imbedded, so how do we know they weren't there for some other reason?
To: dighton
They heard that Jesse was coming so they got out of the country.

they should thank their lucky stars...journalists have disappeared in the past in Iraq and not turned up.
To: dighton
The Iraqis probably got word that Jesse was heading over and decided it just wasn't worth keeping these guys. Iraqis fear alliteration.
