CNN TV has reported this morning that Allied forces "may have found chemical weapons at Ansar al Islam camp in Northern Iraq".
The Agonist weblog comments on hearing the same:
Allied forces may have found chemical weapons at a camp of the radical Islamist group, Ansar al Islam, in northern Iraq, reported CNN on April 1.
National Review Online has a similar tease:
ANSLAR AL ISLAM & WMD [Kathryn Jean Lopez]
CNN On Air is reporting suspected chemcial/bioweapon evidence found at the camp seized over the weekend.

I know General Myers connected Ansar al Islam to the ricin terrorists arrested in Britain earlier this year. Makes sense.

Bear in mind:
Even if this is true, it does not connect them to Saddam. Ansar and Saddam were not friends of each other.

Not under Iraq's control inspectors wouldn't have gone there, Iraq knew nothing about it, doesn't matter, who cares.
Those will the talking points on this.

Uh, what difference does that make? Same objectives, same WMD's. Brothers in arms.

Its not enough proof....
Iraqi Chemical Suits - check!
Iraqi Nerve anecdote - check!
Iraqi gas masks - check!
Rincin at terrorist camp - check!
None of this means they have chemical weapons of course.
They (leftists) need to see Saddam pouring VX into missile warheads and placing Anthrax into envelopes to be convinced.

Maybe that's true, but as long as it's within the borders of Iraq, then this is what this operation is all about.

Ansar and Saddam were not friends of each otherI thought the head of Ansar was the person Powell said was headquartered in Baghdad.

Booo hoo ha ha ....let me get this straight. A man like Saddam that spends Billions of dollars on his own security, gases goat herders, has no,awaremness, control or concern if there is a terrorist camp in his country..... ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?
To: The Other Harry
Stalin and Hitler weren't friends either. Didn't stop them from carving up Poland, did it?

Yeah. "Happened on his watch"..."should have known", etc. is only good for Repub presidents.

Fine, then. Locating and destroying chemical weapons held by acknowledged terrorist organizations, abroad, is a legitimate activity of the War on Terrorism.
The soldiers that discovered this should be awarded special medals and there should be a special briefing about this.
The more we tie the War in Iraq to the War on Terrorism, the better (because it IS a terrorist state, whether or not certain groups are allied with the capital).

True, that is the likely lefty spin, however I believe that it DOES matter to the vast majority of Americans and probably Brits, Aussies, etc., as they believe that this is all about the war on terrorism and this is more evidence that this Iraq war is part of the larger war, that it WAS necessary in preventing attacks, and that we ARE winning the larger war. Some of the left is spinning themselves furiously into irrelevance with their blatent dishonesty, people ARE paying attention and that is making a difference.

So, then, if the French had a bilogical lab in the United States, we could remove the US from complicity of knowledge and support because Bush and Chirac don't like each other?
Seems a weak argument to me.
Unless we wish to pretend that warfare we support can be trained in our nation without the knowledge of the government.

A man like Saddam that spends Billions of dollars on his own security, gases goat herders, has no,awaremness, control or concern if there is a terrorist camp in his country. If you view the following map, you will see Halabja in the upper right corner of Iraq. The Ansar-el-Islam enclave was located to the north of that. In other words, it was beyond the territory control by the Baghdad authorities, in the Kurdish regions of the country. Sorry, but that's the truth. Now, I have no particular view on whether they actually collaborated with Saddam, but this 'evidence' would not violate the 1991 ceasefire agreement which is at issue here.

ain't that the truth. good post

They (leftists) need to see Saddam pouring VX into missile warheads and placing Anthrax into envelopes to be convinced. That would not do it. The lefties would insist the CIA staged the whole thing.

Besides, we seem to have criminals over here who are not complicit with our government. A few of them, anyway.
You can't necessarily connect those dots.
To: smith288
If memory serves me, there is also the matter that the #2 man in this camp was caught requesting results and giving congrats to the assassins of the American Envoy in Amman, Jordan. He had called from inside Iraq.

"They (leftists) need to see Saddam pouring VX into missile warheads and placing Anthrax into envelopes to be convinced." Hey, these are the same folks who said we could provide videotaped evidence of Bill Clinton personally putting that bullet in Ron Brown's head while simulataneously raping an fourteen-year-old girl and they STILL wouldn't Vote to CONVICT in the Senate Impeachment FARCE!!
