We have an engineer at my lab here who worked on the radar for the Patriot. As of two or three years ago, he swore up and down, Patriots would never, never work, and that the "hit a bullet with a bullet" concept was bunk. I kept saying, "Gerry, how can you possibly say that! Computer technology is at least ten times more advanced than it was ten years ago when you were involved." (to say nothing about the rest of the tech involved..) He never gave an inch, or even conceded some possibliity even after the successful ABM tests we have had.
A couple days ago, I caught him at break time with a bunch of guys and said (very diplomatically - unusual for me) "Thanks for your work on the Patriot. They have been working remarkably - I don't think they have missed even once! I know you feel you did little work for the present system, but thanks for the little work you did." Wow! - did I get an earful! He is suddenly proud of the work he did --- I was also diplomatic enough not to point out (with all that croud around us) how gloomy his assessment of those systems had been only a few months before.

He's always been proud of his part, and had/continues to have, confidence in it.
