Meigs is not for jumbo jets or commercial airliners for the most part...it's a place where private planes fly in and out of. Commercial flights generally go in and out of either O'Hare or Midway, both are over crowded.

I am sure there are several little airports in and around Chicago where private planes land.... losing one may not be a real loss to the city in the long run, but the planes that are stranded there have a real problem that is not cheap to solve!

O'Hare is the largest. It's almost completely separated from the City, connected to it by a small isthmus of City land. Midway is inside the city on the southwest side. It's smaller, but 727's and L-1011's get in and out just fine. I use both, but prefer Midway due to the smaller size. Meigs is a one-runway airport that handles general aviation and small commuter flights only. It's on an island right on the lake front, right next to the Loop. I don't approve of his methods, but Daley is right about the proximity of the planes in and out of Meigs to downtown Chicago.

Chicago has had three airports: O'Hare, Midway, and Meigs. Meigs is was the smallest. The funny thing is that all these fat cat politicians keep screaming that we need a "third airport" for Chicago. It looks like they just demolished the third airport.

Meigs is was located right downtown, cute little airport surronded by city attractions and a prime convention site. Apprently Daley and his goons would rather "expand" the already enormous O'Hare by bulldozing several hundred suburban homes in Bentsenville, IL
