"The folks in Chicagoland seem to have an imature little jerkwad running things there."They do. They have him, his city council of yes men, the rat machine and now his boy in the governor's chair. The people in the city are dumb and they elect the bozo, time after time. They just don't know any better.
All the planes there can be pulled out with a truck, but it will cost. The feds, the State and the courts ought to make him put the airport back and hold him in the county jail 'till it's done. I hope the crews go on strike too while he's in there.

It's on the lake front $$

It's a family of terrorists. Going back to King Richard the Daddy, who instigated the "police riot" in 1968.
Even my brother in law, a Chicago Democrat, can't stand the bastards.
But so much voting goes on near the cemetaries that they keep on getting elected. Someone needs to have a chat with all those dead people...

I lived most of my life in Chicago, and am very familiar with Meigs field. This makes no sense, at least as far as
Mayor Daley has explained it. The mere existence of an airport, regardless of the size and regardless of its proximity to downtown Chicago, has nothing to do with the designs of terrorists/plane hijackers. Terrorists don't need an airport to try to steer planes into buildings, unless the security fear is that a hijacked plane could approach Meigs the way a legit plane could, but continue on easily to plow into the Sears Tower, perhaps> IS THIS THE LOGIC??

IS THIS THE LOGIC?? you are giving King Daley too much credit.

Chicago
has had three airports: O'Hare, Midway, and Meigs. Meigs
is was the smallest. The funny thing is that all these fat cat politicians keep screaming that we need a "third airport" for Chicago. It looks like they just demolished the third airport.
Meigs is was located right downtown, cute little airport surronded by city attractions and a prime convention site. Apprently Daley and his goons would rather "expand" the already enormous O'Hare by bulldozing several hundred suburban homes in Bentsenville, IL

Don Wade ripping into Daley right now. He thinks--as do I--that Daley has truly lost his mind! Even Roma-a hopleless new-age lefty- thinks the mayor is no longer "cute". They said to check out the back page of todays trib to read the full transcript of the mayors press conference yesterday. It is truly insane!

Has anyone seen this on national TV? Maybe Shep Smiths show? Or anywhere? I'm just wondering if this is getting any national coverage. It's truly bizzare.

yOU'RE RIGHT---I'M PROBABLY GIVING HIM TOOMUCH CREDIT--
i GREW UP UNDER HIS DAD, KING RICHARD THE FIRST. We moved from Chicago to AZ. just before Harold Washington was elected.Interesting to know there was an interim between the two Daleys--maybe King the 2nd wasn't motivated enough at the time to take the reins directly from his father.

I first saw this on the BBC web site and had to come here and see what was up. It really is crazy that I didn't see it on any of the US news network web sites. My jaw has been hanging open for the last 20 minutes, I just can't believe this can happen in America, in such a huge city as Chicago. I just can't believe it...

"I have lived here for 7 years. I've been down to the lake front and Meigs MANY times....for the size of planes that fly in and out of there as long as they maintain restrictions they should fly out OVER the lake and not through downtown, this should not have been a security issue."
That premise is alright as long as the pilots obey the restrictions. What happens if a terrorist takes the plane right into downtown? Not much time to stop him from doing his dirty deed. Not that I'm defending Daley by any means.
To: Mo1
Yes it is right by the lake downtown. I'm sure the Mayor has lots of his buddies lined up to develop this suddenly available prime real estate. Looks like a pretty transparent land grab to me.

When Daley I died, Daley II was otherwise occupied in public office and wasn't ready to take over yet. It was a wild scene, since it was quickly found that there was no clear line of succession defined in Chicago law. Eventually the Aldermen agreed upon an "Intermim Mayor" (one of their own). Then, at the next regular election, the maverick Jane Byrne ran against the machine's candidate. The machine made a huge mistake, though. It snowed like hell the day before election day, but only the politically favored areas got dug out by the city. Mass transit stops in the white areas somehow got cleared out right away, but mass transit stops in minority areas didn't. Many stories of people walking to the polls intending to vote machine, slipping and falling, and getting up and voting for Jane.
Jane was interesting, and I personally thought she provided great entertainment. There was actual debate in the City Council (not that any of them were comfortable with that). But, she didn't do a great job running the city. At the next election, she faced two challengers; Harold Washington and Daley II. Daley II and Jane split the white vote and lost (Daley I lost one of his early attempts for office as well) ran against her, he won. He was a) black, and b) reasonably articulate. He's have been re-elected, but towards the end of his term, he died of a heart attack. I remember watching Dr. Stern, the Coroner of Cook County, give a press conference about his autopsy findings. He let people know, in crude detail, that Harold's body was shot through with fat everywhere, and that he basically ate himself to death.
Anyway, at the subsequent election, Daley II ran. This time he had all his ducks in a row, beat the black candidate, and has been Mayor ever since. He'll be Mayor for life, just like his dad, because his father taught him well the lesson that Mike Royko well documented that he himself had learned: don't touch the money. Let your friends feed at the trough. Then, when the feds show up, they follow the money. The people who take money get burned, but if you stay single-minded in your pursuit of power over money, you'll stay clean.

Hey Flyer
As a former resident of Illinois, I know this action is going to make a lot of folks steaming mad. Meigs is kind of a landmark in Chicago. It sits right on the lakefront and offers easy access to the Loop.
Daily and his democrat machine have been at odds with the State of Illinois for years, but now that they have a liberal governor (thanks to the corrupt George Ryan and single-handedly setting back the republican party in Illinois 20 years), Daily has great friends at the top of the state government. Illinois is quicky becoming another California.
... So happy to be in the great state of Texas.

What's the real reason behind this? It's inside the city limits and he isn't in charge of it. Private property drives him crazy. (and he was already crazy.)
He wants to turn it into a park and NAME IT AFTER HIS FAT ASS WIFE. He has been trying to do it for a long time (years) before 9-11, which is his current excuse. It is a landfill in any case. The city needs another park like a boyscout troop needs a pedophile.
He lied as recently as last week that he would close it down.
