What's the alternative, short of killing them all or forcing them into Jordan and Egypt? Living together in peace maybe?

There is no chance Israel and her friends will take this ultimatum seriously... and I would like to ask Condie what is the unseemly haste of the Administration in setting up a state for those who hate America. Has she lost her mind? Sorry, but I'll fight her and the President tooth and nail on this one on behalf of America's interests.

"outer-area settlements"....
I guess that's a code word for the Occupied Territories? Which of course is a code phrase for land that Israel took fair and square when they won the 6 days war. A war where they were attacked. Why should they give up anything?

Washington (AP) - The White House said Monday its road map for setting up a Palestinian state by the end of 2005 is not negotiable and that Israel must "play its part" to pave the way. In a speech to a pro-Israel lobby group, Condoleezza Rice, who is President Bush's national security adviser, also called on all Arab governments to recognize Israel's right to exist and said democratic reforms within the Palestinian Authority were "extremely important."
The road map, prepared jointly with the European Union, the United Nations and Russia, is designed to reopen negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians once Mahmoud Abbas is confirmed as the Palestinian prime minister. Rice, who had asked that her remarks to thousands of members of the pro-Israel lobby be off-the-record to the news media, said of Israel and the Palestinians: "We expect their comments; it is not a matter of renegotiation. It can be commented on by the parties."
Bush envisions two states, democratic Israel and democratic Palestine, living side by side in peace.
Unless the President envisions the River Jordan between the two states, he will not win the War on Terror.
The failure of the first Gulf War was twofold: Hussein was left in power, and the Oslo accords gave power to Yasser Arafat. The Administration is giving every indication of having only learned one of the lessons.
The road map is a dead end.

But why is he talking about a Palestinian state by 2005 if the Arab terrorist states haven't done what you say they must? Because after we kick Saddam and Assad out of the region, the hope is that the Arabs will fall in line. We'll see what happens, but if the Arabs do not do their part, I don't see the state becoming a reality.

Do you really think that the Arabs will honor the prerequisites? I don't. No. You know that. I know that. And Bush knows that. Yet he keep going about saying we will have a Palestinian state by 2005. That does not make any sense, especially because terrorism against Israel has been increasing.

Let's hope you're right and the stuff in this article is, as johnb838 said in post #9, window dressing to prove laster on that the Arabs are not willing to compromise. Bush will not stab Israel in the back. You can be assured of that. He is a man of his word.

Why should they give up anything? Maybe because the land Israel took through war included a population of Arabs who still live there?

"What's the alternative, short of killing them all or forcing them into Jordan and Egypt?"
That sounds like a perfect alternative, considering that is what ALL the other States in the middle east would like to see happen to Israel. If the problem is just the settlements why was Israel attacked in '67 by all it's neighbors. Because they wanted Israel gone. How dare the actual legitimate owners of that land actually live there???!!??? Israel was attacked and defended herself and won. The territories are their land. It's not about "Palestinians" it's about the end of Israel and to a lesser extent the only democracy in the middle east.
It's funny, the leader of the PLO/PLA is an Egyptian, whose wife and daughter live in a posh Paris apartment.....

Because, Israel is building NEW settlements on existing lands occupied by the Arab "refugees" who call themselves "Palestinians". What's the alternative, short of killing them all or forcing them into Jordan and Egypt?
Israel is building settlements on what is legitmately Israeli land. The palestinians are not a legitmate people, they have no legitimate national identity, they do noit recognize Israel's borders, and they've already had an artificial homeland created for them: Jordan. This is the reason for Jordan's existence. That is where the palestinians should go, the Hashmeite occupation notwithstanding.
It is time to stop rewarding Arab terrorism. The road map giving a second "palestinian" state to the Arabs will reward past terrorism, and encourage more of the same. This is indisuptable, there is no evidence to the contrary.
There will be war either way. Why are we trying so mightily to put one of our best friends and allies at a disadvantage before it breaks out?
Who is Condilezza Rice to tell Israel to commit national suicide?
To: SunStar
Yes.
But we are basing our attitudes towards a Palestinians state on what will happen in the Arab world after Saddam is deposed.

People really believe this?
Bush et al are appeasing no one for one simple reason: it's all public relations nonsense got up to please those who are dumb enough to believe it. And you think Sharon isn't in on this? When it comes time to stop building/expanding settlements and setting up a "Palestinian" state dollars to donuts something will blow up and it just won't happen.
The Bush administration are simply throwing a bone to the Arabs and Blair's supporters in Britain.

Huh?? There are Arabs who live down the street from me...they lived there before I moved in....we don't suicide bomb each other. There are plenty of Arab-Israelis who live in Israel and get along quite well. If left to their own devices, the Arabs who live in the territories would function just fine as Israeli citizens.
The fact of the matter is, they are not left to their own devices. They are manipulated by the groups and organazations funded by the Arab states. The terrorists are a proxy for the states in the reigon who cannot complete their goal of whipping out Israel.
