Peter Arnett, Live from Baghdad
Peter Arnett: Iraq has always been off limits in many areas, more so than a western country, so its almost impossible to get access to military facilities. Interestingly enough, as these new series of UN inspections have begun, the media has been able to get into military localities after the inspectors have been in because the Iraqis have decreed that news people can go where the inspectors go. So you do get access now to some areas that were totally off limits a few years ago. But overall you have to negotiate with the Iraqis to get anywhere. They argue that the country is in a state of national security because theyve been at war with the U.S. they say, since January 16, 1991 when the Gulf War started and they feel that they have every right to restrict journalists for security measures.
Having said that, weve been here 3-1/2 weeks with the National Geographic Explorer team and weve got access to many aspects of society. Weve interviewed a major sports figure, weve been to his house, weve watched him play ball, weve interviewed a student and went to her home. Weve been to visit Tariq Aziz, the deputy prime minister. Weve been to the old front lines south of Bashra, weve seen lots of destroyed tanks which are still there from the first Gulf War. Weve been to a major refinery in Baghdad, talked to the manager who expressed his fears about future bombings. Weve been by a huge oil pumping area. So if youre patient, you can really get access to a considerable amount of what journalists are interested in here. Really, patience is a virtue in Iraq.

I noticed a definite swing to "Hard A-Port" by NG in the last few years... my Mother-in-Law's a lifetime subscriber, and I was appalled how far left they went since the mid-1990's.We've had a subscription since 1969 - yearly jackets and all. Because of their obvious slide and LIBERAL bent, we've discussed not renewing. This has convince us.

No one admires a traitor. Of course not the country they're betraying (and the men they help kill), but neither does the country they're working with. To all they are scum.

One of the strange side-effects of my wife's surgery in August 2001 was that I got to read every NG in her office's lobby- some going back to the 1950's!
Until the mid to late 1990's, Geographic seemed to be the archtypal "dispassionate observer," but it has mutated Left beyond any doubt. I believe the Smithsonian Magazine has followed a similar course.

In doing some research on other topics, I was alarmed to see just how much information etc for lesson plans on other educational material was coming from the news media of all places.
There was a time when I thought the TV in the classroom for piping in info & lessons was a good thing. I don't think so anymore.
Of course, since textbooks are now filling up with revisionist history, they aren't much better than the TV.

I believe the Smithsonian Magazine has followed a similar course. The Smithsonian has followed that course. Check out all the "new and improved" captions on exhibits next time you go.

Of course, since textbooks are now filling up with revisionist history, they aren't much better than the TV.I know parents in Texas are fighting, not only to remove errors in text books, but to balance the very LIBERAL bent filling those pages. The publishing industry is so very, very LIBERAL.

Fox News just played back some Arnett comments made on Iraqi TV. Peter has flipped out.

Col. Hunt on Fox and Friends just called him a "baldheaded son-of-a-bitch" live on national television.
I love Fox.

I love it! Col. Hunt is my favorite because he takes no prisoners. Can you imagine having him lead the troops?
