Nicholas DeGenova is an
assistant professor of
Anthropology at Columbia University
in New York City.
"The only true heroes are those who find ways that help defeat the U.S. military," Nicholas DeGenova, an assistant professor of anthropology and Latino studies at Columbia University, told the audience at Low Library Wednesday night. "I personally would like to see a million Mogadishus."
Do you have an opinion about DeGenova's remark that you would care to share with him? Unless it's been changed in the last 24 hours, his email address at Columbia is: Nicholas Paul DeGenova

Sorry, about the mess up with DeGenova's email address. Here it is in the open: npd18@columbia.edu

That is really sick. And to think -- not a year ago I was seriously considering accepting a fellowship to pursue my JD/PhD (in political science) at Columbia.
If there is another perspective on campus there, it needs to speak out!

While he did not retract his statements, he said he hoped they do not lead to "death threats," I agree. Why waste time with a threat, when there's work to be done.

This article mentions that one Gary Sick was at the teach-in. Is this the same clown from the hapless Carter White House national security staff who publicly pushed some idiot theory over supposed contacts by the 1980 Reagan campaign with the Iranian ayatollahs to delay release of the American hostages? Or is it another clown with the same name?

That's what I was wondering! Gosh, you'd think he'd lay off them long enough to get his picture taken!
He looks like he's fixin' to keel over!

Thankfully, the editors of the Columbia Spectator recognized this event for what it was:
Last night, 30 faculty members participated in what Columbia's web site billed as a "teach-in" designed "to promote continued critical examination of the most pressing concerns of our time." The goal of the event, presumably, was to spark intellectual, scholarly discussion about the war in Iraq. But last night's event was not a serious debate. It was a forum where professors could express their views unopposed.
[snip]
Billed as a change of pace from the anti-war rally that occurred just hours earlier near the sundial, the teach-in should have been a tremendous opportunity for Columbia students to learn about the war, and good reasons for opposing it, from experts from widely varied disciplines. While some professors did present articulate and sophisticated reasons for disagreeing with the war, the possibility of disagreement was never taken seriously; no "teaching" took place. Too many students left the teach-in feeling intimidated not by the overwhelming opposition to the war, but to the way an academic forum became a fervid presentation of an exclusive viewpoint. In the future, the University should be wary of advertising a "critical" forum that is so uncritical of its own perspective.

A disgrace to Italian-Americans and an insult to all Americans. My daughter has just applied to Columbia as a transfer student in Anthropology - - luckily for her, it's physical anthro and she won't have to deal with this particular asshole should she be accepted.

It is a REAL SHAME that this guy can leave his home, get in his car, which is not covered with shaving cream, and get to his office. It's a shame he doesn't have to step over lots of patriotic people sitting in front of his office to get to the classes he has to teach. It's a shame he doesn't have to spend the first 30 of every 50 minute lecture trying to get "lost, confused, misdirected" people who are sure that they are there for a patriotic rally, out of the seats in his lecture halls so that his students can come in and take their seats. It's a shame that he doesn't come back out to go home to find his car swathed in red, white, and blue crepe paper, photos of our POWs and MIAs rubber-cemented to all his windows. And when he gets home--likewise, except of course that the pictures should be pasted on both facing in and facing out. It's a shame he hasn't been toilet-papered today. It's a shame that articles about the suffering of the Iraqi people under Saddam are not being mailed to him from all over the country, in such quantities that he cannot find his real mail in the mailbags being brought in for him in his home and office.
It would also be nice if some of the actual photos from Mogadishu actually made it into the mix. Or does only the other side's human suffering matter, after all, and not those of people who belong to this horribly inferior culture of ours?

I think we need to e-mail the president of the college. If he gets enough e-mails maybe he'll fire the prof. Can you get that e-mail address?
To: Dr. Scarpetta
I'm not sure that anyone can legally fire an employee because of email volume. I joined in an effort to get a geology professor fired at who had videotaped himself raping a child in his office. He was fired--after he was convicted and put in prison. That was months and months of inaction from the university, and none of the mail, calls, or email accomplished a thing.

That's a shocking story. If we can't get this guy fired, suspension would be a good start.

Happy to help you. The president of the college is Lee Bollinger. His official campus e-mail address is:
bollinger@columbia.edu
Best wishes,
Penny
