Good Morning.
This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - LIVE THREAD.
It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.
Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A breif description of what the graphic is would help:
To all who helped this get started, thank you!
Special thanks to An.American.Expatriate for staring the daily threads, Mo1 for the screamer, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, and, of course, Belly Girl...

Do you know I've only seen SNL once . . . I'm no devotee, but when I watched, the features were Rosanne RosannaDanna and company (i.e., 15 years ago).

Image a map divided into rectangles.
Then images B-52/artillary told to "None of our guys are in this box, and they can't get out of these coordinates, so kill everything inside these coordinates."
Idea works best for immobile targets when you have the time to wait for the artillary to work and lots of ammo available.
Used to be, aircraft were too innacurate and too small/slow to hit troops effectively, but B-52's with GPS bombs remove both problems.

It looked like the 3rd strike on the same target...Boom, boom, BOOM!

The Iraqi's are lucky ...we could have made Bag look like Dresden by now, without the schnitzel. I really don't want to hear one reporter talk about civilian casualtys again.

Al Jazeera's showing poor old Baghdad in the dawn's early light...with the obligatory smoke, fire and carnage from the evil colonialist. It must gall them to no end for them to know that the Arabs are powerless to stop it. I have a feeling that it's getting close to decision time for the Iraqi's with respect to the strategic use of WMD.

"... (i) CAN criticise what's going on...(blah, blah, blah)...We are, at best, observors. ..."

Bottom line is...
You admit you don't know crap about what is REALLY going on,
except what you are fed by the nightly news.
But you vow to spout your vaccuous criticisms anyway, regardless.
I have you on 'ignore'.

Technology can be used for better or worse, and the USA has done an admirable job of applying technology to war. The politics of the present situation militate against a Dresden or Hiroshima or Nagasaki type action, and I applaud our leadership for its careful application of extraordinary power. Note I do not call it restraint, as there will be no half-measures. What is being applied is care, not restraint.

You realize that these web cams remove the biggest problem long-range planners have: What is/was there in the target area, did my guys get through (particularly with cruise missiles since there's no pilot to complete and end-of-mission report); and did my missile/bomb hit anything?
Somebody in some compound is now marking off a target, based on a known explosion time in Bagdad equalling some particular missile/bomb assault.

"Perhaps someone will repost a link to maps. The Russian ordnance maps are very good. "
See post 1766... Great map.

War is purgatoryThe Spectator, by Mark Steyn Im writing this a few hours before deadline. So by the time you read this Saddam may have won. That would seem to be the upshot of the BBC coverage we get over here, not to mention dear old Reuters. As Douglas Hamilton reported, US military prowess suffered another setback in Iraq on Monday and another omen that bullets rather than liberators garlands may await the invasion force when it finally reaches Baghdad....
Well, speaking as someone not privy to the entrails of the Reuters chicken, let me go out on a limb here: the Anglo-Aussie-American forces will win. ...

It looked like the 3rd strike on the same target...Boom, boom, BOOM! Could be a bunker or tunnel. Open it up so anybody can get in and pursue the Ba'ath leadership.
