Good Morning.
This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - LIVE THREAD.
It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.
Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A breif description of what the graphic is would help:
To all who helped this get started, thank you!
Special thanks to An.American.Expatriate for staring the daily threads, Mo1 for the screamer, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, and, of course, Belly Girl...

From an article on Iraqi ultralights buzzing our troops (?!?!)
"There was a second hint Saturday that U.S. forces may have underestimated Iraqs technological capability. Journalists traveling with units in the field were told to stop using a certain brand of satellite telephone. The command is worried that, in some fashion it would not explain, the Iraqis might use signals from those phones to gather intelligence about American operations. The command did not order all phones shut down, just those using the Thuraya satellite. That system is based in the United Arab Emirates and is Arab owned. Other satellite phones, including those in the Iridium system, were not subject to a shut down order. Iridium is an American-owned system."
Which goes a long way towards explaining why they're shut down. The question had been asked in this morning Centcom briefing.

There will be no "Why We Fight" films made in this present-day Hollwood.

Good Baghdad City map link below
Baghdad city Map
The dense city is about 12 x 11 miles (wider E-W, than tall N-S). The entire city is fairly 18 x 12 miles.

Toronto Star, by Jim Byers Berkeley: Protest has faded like tattered jeans |
|
The images are burned into the consciousness of those who remember the protests against the Vietnam War. Long-haired students with tattered jeans and day-glo signs plastered with peace symbols, singing songs and carrying signs denouncing the war. ''To be honest, there hasn't been much (anti-war) activity,'' said Devin Woolridge, who works at the People's Park recreation centre in Berkeley |

U.S. forces may have underestimated Iraq's technological capability. From the details of the story, it isn't so much Iraq capability as it is Arab or Muslim teamwork, behind the scenes.

Man---you are right about all that smoke! Whatever just got hit must have been had fuel in it. Billowing black smoke at that rate only comes from highly combustable material. Maybe a gas/diesel u/g storage tank or two.....almost 20 minutes of solid black smoke.

General on Fox saying we are using kill boxes over the RG divisions. And you have to know we are picking the boxes based on visual (Predator, etc.) intelligence.

A kill box is a grid square on a map and we have bombers over that area ......if anything goes into that grid square the pilot is watching he bombs it.. and keeps bombing things that enter his kill box..
