School naming event today Ceremony: Compton school to be dedicated to ex-President Clinton. By Ian Hanigan, Staff writer COMPTON City officials, school administrators and local residents are expected to gather today for a formal dedication of William Jefferson Clinton Elementary School the Compton district's first new school in more than 35 years.
After six months of construction, the $16 million two-story facility at 6500 E. Compton Blvd. opened in January, pulling about Clinton 800 students from nearby Kelly, Foster and Roosevelt elementary schools.
Parents who wanted their children to attend Clinton Elementary submitted applications last year for a lottery-style drawing, said Christine Sanchez, spokeswoman for the Compton Unified School District.
The new campus, which can accommodate up to 1,000 students on its 9 acres, includes a $250,000 computer lab and has computers, televisions and telephones in every classroom, Sanchez said.
Clinton Elementary is the 24th elementary school campus in the Compton system, which includes seven middle schools and three high schools. The district serves about 37,000 students in Compton, Carson, Enterprise, South Los Angeles and Willowbrook.
Prior to the June groundbreaking, Compton school board President Isadore Hall said the district selected the nation's 42nd president as the school's namesake because of his support for education, especially in minority communities.
While the former president is not expected to attend today's ceremony, his likeness will be present amid the proclamations and ribbon-cutting poses. Large color posters are expected to be on display, and Clinton himself will offer a recorded message via video screen. The dedication also is set to include the unveiling of a plaque and a bust of Clinton.
Those who have signed on to personally attend the ceremony include Compton Mayor Eric Perrodin, CUSD Superintendent Jesse Gonzalez and Virginia Ward-Roberts, principal of Clinton Elementary.
Maybe the reporter needs to head back to elementary school, too.
