Excellent. We have a copy of the Szyk haggadah.
When I was a kid, my parents gave me a copy of the Szyk illustrated edition of Andersen's fairy tales. Those pictures really scared me!

Some people find inspiration during war times in such things as beautifully crafted patriotic art and lilting music. If such things don't interest you, why not just skip the thread?

Yes, they're beautiful. But Jim Robinson specifically asked us to confine such things to "Chat" especially during this crisis.
Let's follow the rules, shall we?

Arthur Szyk. A great unknown artist
An now a less-unknown great artist, thanks to your post, dennisw.
I like his work -- don't recall ever seeing it before.
All the technical beauty of Maxfield Parrish applied to great patriotic themes and
an order of magnitude increase in making the images detailed/intricate...
that's a winner in my book.
Right now I'm still waiting for someone to just tell Warner Brothers to go jump off
the pier...and revive Bugs Bunny as a "fussin' and fighting" under-dog (OK,
under-wabbit) to inspire American fighters (in the field, in the air, on/under sea,
and on the home front).
IIRC, there was one Bugs Bunny cartoon with Bugs, Yosemite Sam (?) and an Arab
duking it out in a fortress in the middle of the desert.
My memory on this may be a little faulty...but an edited/updated version could
be a great tonic for the guys/gals "in country".
But if the cartoon I recall actually exists, I'm sure it's in a vault at Warner Brothers...
never to see the light of day again.
Thanks to all those Democrats who founded "The Free Speech Movement" at Berkely
and birthed the opinion-muzzling concept of "political correctness".

dennisw, you've helped me solve a bit of a mystery.
I had to serve on jury duty in downtown Los Angeles about a month ago.
As I did my jury duty (over a week), I noticed a street sign a few blocks from the
new LA Cathedral and Disney concert hall.
Of course, I figured that the street named after "General Thaddeus Kosciuszko"
was for a Revolutionary War figure...a visit to szyk.com told me the "rest of the story":
Thaddeus Kosciuszko, born in Poland in 1746, was trained as a Polish cadet
and studied military subjects in Germany, France, and Italy, with special training
in the science of fortification at Brest. Entering the American army in 1776,
he served with honor in all the principal campaigns, especially in New York and
the South, and rendered signal service as a military engineer. After the Revolution
he returned to Poland and devoted himself to the service of that country in
the trying years which preceded its partition, continuing his efforts in
exile until his death in 1817.
Thanks again for doing this thread!

Yeah, the "rule" is: "Anything I want to do is right. Anyone who disagrees is wrong."
If you'd care to show me how these cartoons, as fascinating as they are, constitute either "News" or "Activism," I'd be pleased to see it.

That is awesome! I never saw that Founding of Israel. I gave my son
Pathways to the Bible for his 17th birthday that I bought years ago on ebay. I love that book and I love Szyk's illustrations.
Here is Arthur Szyk's dedication from Pathways to the Bible, also posted at Song of Songs. Illustrator Arthur Szyk writes this Dedication:
In March 1943 my beloved seventy-year-old mother, Eugenia Szyk, was taken from the ghetto of Lodz to the Nazi furnaces of Maidanek. With her, voluntarily went her faithful servant, the good Christian, Josefa, a Polish peasant. Together, hand in hand, they were burned alive. In memory of the two noble martyrs I dedicate my pictures of the Bible as an eternal Kaddish for these great souls. Arthur Szyk, January 1946
