WABC radio is reporting three persons of "Arabic descent" have been detained after leaving suspicious item on Williamsburg Bridge.

This bridge is one of the main routes into Manhattan from Brooklyn.

Fox 5 reporter says "all traffic now stopped in both directions on Manhattan Bridge." Brooklyn Bridge "not yet affected."

He also now says suspects were seen climbing one of the bridge's towers. Is backtracking on the "suspicious packages" report: says not able to confirm any packages were left.

Repeating report of suspects "rapelling" down side of bridge. Still unconfirmed.

Broadway and the area south and southwest of it is Hassidic. Monday night when I took the subway back to Manhatten over the bridge from Peter Lugars, we were met by troops who searched each car before letting the subway go on.
