Saddam's 'Mrs Anthrax' revealed
Evening Standard ^ | By Hugh Dougherty in Qatar

Posted on 03/28/2003 1:23:39 AM PST by Freedomsfriend

In a chilling signal to the Allies, the woman who runs Iraq's chemical warfare programme has been shown on TV at Saddam Hussein's war cabinet.

Scientist Huda Salih Mahdi Ammash, known as Mrs Anthrax to Western intelligence, was sitting next to Saddam Hussein's son Qusay. The pictures, broadcast by Iraqi television, send a clear message to the West and increase fears that the Iraqi dictator is on the brink of using his weapons of mass destruction.

The woman is the key figure behind Iraq's illegal weapons programme and helped rebuild his biological capibility after the Gulf war in 1991.

But the fact that she is one of Saddam's most trusted aides has shocked Allied military commanders. It comes after the discovery of chemical weapons suits issued to Iraqi soldiers in what could have been a possible preparation for chemical attack on US and British forces.

Any conclusive proof that Iraq possesses banned chemical or biological weapons would be a huge boost to America and Britain in the battle to win over world opinion in support of the war. There have been reports that Saddam has taken to his deep bomb-proof bunker as he prepares his soldiers for the battle for Baghdad which he hopes will see allied forces sucked into bitter street fighting.

The Iraqi capital saw one of the heaviest nights of bombing of the war so far last night, with telecommunication facilities targeted by US missiles.

But the advance of US and British troops appears to have stalled, with constant harassment by small groups of Iraqi irregulars.

Chemical massacre of the Kurds by the Iraqi regime Halabja-March 1988

http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/?020325fa_FACT1

THE GREAT TERROR by JEFFREY GOLDBERG (Excerpt):

'Across the city, other families were making similar decisions. Nouri Hama Ali, who lived in the northern part of town, decided to lead his family in the direction of Anab, a collective settlement on the outskirts of Halabja that housed Kurds displaced when the Iraqi Army destroyed their villages. "On the road to Anab, many of the women and children began to die," Nouri told me. "The chemical clouds were on the ground. They were heavy. We could see them." People were dying all around, he said. When a child could not go on, the parents, becoming hysterical with fear, abandoned him. "Many children were left on the ground, by the side of the road. Old people as well. They were running, then they would stop breathing and die."

Nasreen's family did not move quickly. "We wanted to wash ourselves off and find water to drink," she said. "We wanted to wash the faces of the children who were vomiting. The children were crying for water. There was powder on the ground, white. We couldn't decide whether to drink the water or not, but some people drank the water from the well they were so thirsty."

They ran in a panic through the city, Nasreen recalled, in the direction of Anab. The bombardment continued intermittently, Air Force planes circling overhead. "People were showing different symptoms. One person touched some of the powder, and her skin started bubbling."

A truck came by, driven by a neighbor. People threw themselves aboard. "We saw people lying frozen on the ground," Nasreen told me. "There was a small baby on the ground, away from her mother. I thought they were both sleeping. But she had dropped the baby and then died. And I think the baby tried to crawl away, but it died, too. It looked like everyone was sleeping."

At that moment, Nasreen believed that she and her family would make it to high ground and live. Then the truck stopped. "The driver said he couldn't go on, and he wandered away. He left his wife in the back of the truck. He told us to flee if we could. The chemicals affected his brain, because why else would someone abandon his family?" '

I'm confused. I thought it was the Dr. Rihab Taha (mother of the bioweapons program) who was in the meeting. Is this Huda woman another evil scientist?

I just HOPE that I do not hear anyone praising Saddam's commitment to women in science.

To follow up on myself, I'm thinking this Huda woman is the chemical weapons person, and Rihab was the bioweapons person.

I know, but this is the first I have heard of Huda Salih Mahdi Ammash. That's why I'm puzzled. But, I did a web search, and I see "She has a Ph.D. in genetics and microbiology from the University of Missouri. Dr. Taha's degree is from Britain. So I guess they're two separate women.

A chemical or bio launch against our troops by the Ba'athi regime would be suicidal.

    1) I would bet all our troops are on a Pyridostigmine Bromide and Cipro regimen. They all have smallpox innoculations, move in overpressure vehicles and have superb protective gear. An attack would slow but not stop them.

    2) How is the regime going to deliver them? With artillery, they probably would only get one shell off. Bio weapons do not even have an immediate effect. They may use a drone sprayer. Plus, they don't think we're watching? Moving these munitions into position would be problematic. If they're in barrels, they have to either go in artillery shells or some other delivery means. If we see these goons loading shells with material from 55 gallon drum like containers, what do you think the coalition forces are going to do?

    3) The Combat troops are slightly to the West of Baghdad. The prevailing winds may blow the attack back on the attacker.

    4) It would totally justify the coalition's reasons for going to war.

Why would the regime use them? My guess is they're either desperate and/or they're going to attempt to blame it on the coalition. It will have negligible military impact on the forward coalition troops. They may use them at a time when in their estimation it would be difficult for us to retaliate say with a nuke or MOAB because we're too close to the city. It will be tricky going. Pray for our troops.

It was wunnerful.
