Report: Marines wounded in fighting late Wednesday in Iraq

The Associated Press

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - At least 25 Marines from Camp Lejeune were injured during house-to-house fighting that began Wednesday night in An Nasiriyah, according to a WTVD-TV reporter traveling with the troops. Keith Garvin, reporting live Wednesday evening - about 2 a.m. in Baghdad - said the Marines were wounded over the past few hours in combat that had picked up "quite a bit in the last 10 minutes or so." He reported late Wednesday night that none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

Civilians living behind a Marine camp at An Nasiriyah were seen setting up bunkers in the afternoon, and military officials "said they had heard or felt that something bad was going to happen tonight," Garvin reported.

Intelligence reports indicated 2,000 Iraqi troops were advancing on the camp, and a two-hour fight with missiles and artillery ensued, ultimately augmented by aerial bombing, he said.

Garvin said some of the Iraqi fighters were using women as shields and had given guns to children.

"Unfortunately some of the children have been firing at our Marines and our Marines have been forced to defend themselves," he said.

The wounded appeared to be in addition to 15 Lejeune Marines who have been reported injured during the Iraqi conflict. Eleven Lejeune Marines have died, nine in combat in the An Nasiriyah area and two in accidents.

Really, though, it proves how evil the enemy is. In the end this will be the legacy, eh?

I'm a huge supporter of this war. If I were decade younger and the military would have me, I'd be right there with those in action. I believe I could pull the trigger on anything ... except a child. It's no wonder we're taking casualties: our soldiers are hesitating (just like I would) and their children aren't "mature" shots yet. My hearts go out to both groups. May God give our soldiers comfort, and may He open his arms in heaven to those children who "know not what they do". And, finally, may we bring some serious pain to those responsible.

If they keep it up the Iraqi's are going to get nuked. The Japanese fought ruthlessly but didn't stoop that low, and we we hade to nuke them. These are the actions of a desperate enemy that knows no laws. I predict that the Iraqis will use chemical weapons and that we will then nuke Saddam's bunkers.

In this situation one would just have to adopt a mindset that you ARE fighting an invasion from another world. too bad.

Im afraid this is becoming the mindset of alot of Iraqis it seems.

Yes, I have even more sympathy for Israel now than I ever did. I think we can now see clearly the forces arrayed against us, and it is not unlike the time that the US got into World War II.

Before Americans knew much about that war, rumors were coming back about this guy Hitler, and rumor/denial about some sort of holocaust, but relative apathy until it hit us directly.

Well, now we have seen in graphic detail, beyond anything we saw in Gulf War I, that we are dealing with unmitigated evil (in the form of Iraq and the islamofascists) coupled with complicity from countries (France, Russia, Germany) that had feigned support for civilization.

But from an Israeli perspective, this man has been financing murder of their civilians for years; they had a much truer understanding of the situation than most Americans ever did, a long long time ago. Now I think of Osirak and wonder why we the US didn't see what Chirac/Saddam were up to back then...

Best to find some means of getting photos or video of the kids with guns. Sure, people with an agenda will ignore it, but at least you could prove the moral high ground.

Yup..

.Detach yourselves Marines. Detach yourselves from the mindset of being "good"; your clearing out the pit of hell right now. Your not murdering anyone, your doing your job. None of us will hold it against you.

Those libs need to go over there and take the place of a soldier being shot at. Then see how their comments run.

We are so afraid of what the libs will say, what the press will say, we are letting it cripple us in every aspect of this war. This is unfair to our troops, to the mission and to the U.S.

Maybe it is time for us to put them in their place by just totally ignoring their ranting. That is all they do rant - while others have to do the work. So, why should those doing the work worry about the voices on the sidelines?

Maybe our answer to their questions and complaints should be "this is war, it is not pretty but this method is 100% better than prior wars, and we intend to get it done. Next question." Or, "maybe you can ask Saddam that question at his press conference".

Yes, having kids shooting is despicable.

Advice to USMC:
Aim low, lead less.

Just damn. These children do NOT understand. The evil Iraqis who give these guns to these kids, are ruining their innocence. Grown men have difficulty living with the knowledge that they killed someone, even if they have just cause, or if it is on the battlefield. But these children do not have the benefit of maturity to guide them.

At this point, I have absolutely no doubt that this war will go nuclear.

They're giving us no choice.
