I had a couple nicknames.

My 1st was given to me as I stepped off the bus in San Antonio from civilian life to be greeted by an instructor. He was already yelling at a guy who brought his golf clubs since he recruiter told him he would be able to get in a few holes.

What the instructor was saying was so damn funny I couldn't stop grinning and he named me Smiling Jack after the comic book army guy from WWII.

I was Smiling Jack until I graduated basic.

Rick said he was not armed, and that he wasn't ready to cross the line into combatant.

He probably laid the gun down beside him until the interview was over, so technically he was not armed when asked the question. He'll get ready to cross the line to combatant real fast when the enemy is coming at him.

The really hard part to maintaining composure came when the D.I. took those golf clubs and threw them across the parking lot he was so incensed.

The kid that brought them whined for days about them clubs. They had the little knitted hats on them and everything. I don't know if he ever got them back.
